The nightclubs in the Orono and Old Town areas have little to offer outside of a popular social atmosphere. Since the clubs are enjoyable socially, and several come without the added expense of a cover charge on regular nights, they are frequented by students. The most popular club night is Thursday, because that is the evening when the best drink specials are offered. For those who choose not to drink alcoholic beverages, the clubs can be pretty bland. The location of all Orono clubs is within walking distance of campus. Some are farther than others; however, Curva is located just across the street from the east exit of campus. It is easily accessible and often holds a lot of sponsored parties and events that make it more popular among students.

The Orono clubs have expanded and added more features since they have become the central social scene for club nightlife. 103 offers an excellent social atmosphere and was already established upon its opening because of the reputation of the Bear Brew Pub. Private parties still remain the premier social atmosphere for UMaine students. Most private parties take place in apartments and houses off campus. They do exist in some residence halls and can be successful if they don’t get out of control.

Organization Parties
Many organizations hold parties and dances on campus, but they are both University-catered and difficult to misbehave at. Some organizations have parties at Ushuaia and other local establishments, and they're usually a great Friday or Saturday night activity. Hall Governing Boards and other organizations will occasionally sponsor chem-free parties, which give students the opportunity to participate in dry social events within their own residence halls, or at Memorial Union.

Club ListingsWhat's This?

Staar Club at the University Inn Academic Suites

The Staar Club is a small place with a regular crowd. It doesn't matter how you look when you go there. Admire the Jagermeister bottles lining the back of the bar, or socialize with the locals. This bar is always sporting a mixed crowd. There are some nice activities to take up time, including pool. But this bar is small, gets crowded fast, and is a home base for overly intoxicated individuals who need a short walk home. The staff is incredibly friendly to students patronizing the establishment.

Margaritas Mexican Restaurant

Awesome hand-made margaritas are their specialty. Some are made with as many as seven different alcohols, so drink with caution. Tied with some Mexican food or dessert, you and your friends are in for a treat.

Woodman's Bar & Grill

Woodman's is one of the newer spots in town and is a great spot to hang out with friends. There's a large beer selection.

Bear Brew Pub

Bear Brew Pub is a great place to meet with friends, have a few beers, and hang out, or to dance and enjoy the music. The club and the restaurant, especially the bar, are packed on weekends. The establishments have a great atmosphere, good food, friendly service, and they fit within the college budget. For a good time locally, this is the place to be. It's not only very popular among the students, many residents frequent the establishments, and you will regularly run into one of your professors having dinner in the pub.

Geaghan's Restaurant & Pub

The pub is built around a railroad theme. It's a good place to kick back with some Irish beer, but it's not really party central.
