If you didn’t like any of the food in your high school cafeteria, then chances are that you won’t enjoy the commons food at UMaine. The food is a basic lineup of options that allow the most number of students to have a satisfying meal. But, the difference is that at college you have the choice to eat at any of the commons, so your options are open as to what type of food you want to have for dinner. Chances are that the same will not apply for breakfast, especially if you’re a late-riser who chooses to hold off until the last minute, throw on your clothes, and scarf down a meal so fast you won’t remember what you had by lunchtime. There is a variety of available foods for all meals in the commons. You may also choose to eat at one of the more popular restaurants in Memorial Union.
The food in the commons is one of the most frequent complaints by students living in residence halls because most upperclassmen are not going to select the block plan option, especially if they reside off campus. There is one important thing to remember: Your parents didn’t mass produce a meal for hundreds of students, three times a day, every day, so don’t expect the food here to be like home-cooking.
