5 College Sophomore

Athletics: Our teams are always good and are even on their way to the ACC.

3 College Junior

Athletics: Some people attended sports, but money may be part

4 College Sophomore

Athletics: This campus is all sports and nothing eles, they do not give enough credit to the girl sports, and other interesting and important events are basically swept under the rug.b

5 College Freshman

Athletics: I think we have the best fan base and support out of most schools. For example we just lost a game against our rival UK, but we still all support our basketball players and take the loss as a part of all of us.

3 College Freshman

Athletics: The university of Louisville has many facilities to workout or play sports.

The University’s athletic program is one of the major reasons a lot of students choose to come here. From basketball to football to field hockey to rowing, there is a seemingly endless list of varsity teams. The University has experienced some scandals with its coaches in the recent past (hello, Rick Pitino), but it seems to have only made people more interested in attending games and supporting the teams. Cardinal fans go into every season optimistic, even if Louisville doesn't always win. Discounted student tickets are available to all sporting events, and some are even free. But, if you want to get tickets to a men's basketball or football game you’d better get them early because they will sell out. If you can't make it to a game, you can always find a sports bar that is carrying it—these places are usually packed with fans on game day. L-Raisers, a student organization whose sole purpose is to promote and support U of L sports, adds another dimension to the intense pride Cardinal fans feel.

And it isn’t just all about varsity sports, either. Students often participate in intramurals, or at least go to watch the games. One complaint students have about the athletics here is that certain teams are overlooked, such as field hockey, lacrosse, swimming, and soccer. These sports typically have low game attendance, but students are starting to show more of an interest. Football and basketball will always be the most popular, though, and even when the Cards don't win, U of L fans never give up on their teams.

Most Popular Sports
Football and men's basketball are the most popular, by far.
Most Overlooked Teams
A lot of teams get lost in the shadow of the football and basketball teams. Some of the most overlooked are cross country, equestrian, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, swimming, and tennis.
School Spirit
You'll see hundreds of people wearing U of L attire every day. Students not wearing red and black on game days are in the minority. Student attendance at sporting events, especially men's basketball and football, is always high.
Getting Tickets
For the two major sports on campus, football and men's basketball, students have to purchase student tickets in advance through the athletic department. Most other sporting events, including baseball, field hockey, softball, swimming, and tennis, are free.
Best Place to Take a Walk
Walking around campus will take you past trees, flower gardens, and a variety of interesting buildings and statues. Campus jogging routes with mileages are available on the Fitness and Wellness website (louisville.edu/intramurals/wellness).
Did You Know?
Intramurals are very popular, and teams filled with dorm residents and members from Greek life and other organizations battle for titles in traditional sports like basketball, hockey, Ultimate frisbee, and volleyball, as well as less-traditional ones like billiards, canoeing, and tug-of-war.
