3 College Freshman

Facilities: The dorms suck, everything else is not too bad though.

Facilities: It is once again based on partying, like that is pretty much it.

5 College Freshman

Facilities: The campus itself is gorgeous. There are very nice libraries, study spaces, social spaces, workout centers, and other facilities. The campus life is rich with pride and tradition. It is certainly always vibrant and interesting there!

5 College Freshman

Facilities: The University really has a very nice infrastructure. There are many lovely facilities and resources.

4 College Freshman

Facilities: It's a really beautiful campus. Both the rec center and the main library were recently renovated and are amazing places to exercise, whether you're exercising your body or your mind. The Main Library is great for studying with groups because they have group meeting rooms that you can reserve and are very tech-friendly. Homecoming week and Finals Week are some of the most activity-packed times of the year. During finals week, the school really goes all-out to try to help students do their best, setting up lots of free events to take some of the stress away.

Many of UI’s buildings add to the flavor of the community. Each building on campus has something unique about its design relating back to the state of Iowa, such as the Boyd Law Building, which looks like a corn silo, or walkways that look like giant ears of corn. Most of the buildings on campus offer more than just classroom space—many of the facilities include a lounge and/or a small cafeteria. One of the best features on campus is the Pentacrest, which contains four different education and administrative buildings, and houses the old capitol building from back when the state capitol used to reside in Iowa City. In a freak accident during renovations some years ago, the gold dome of the building caught on fire, but has since been restored. Students enjoy the old capitol not only for its history, but because it’s a quiet place to study.

UI has a bad habit with its facilities, and this is starting to catch up with them. For example, the University will build a state-of-the-art facility, and over time, as renovations are needed, it will ignore them until the last possible moment. Then, it will knock down the old building and replace it with something new and state-of-the-art, which has become a problem in recent years because of significant budget cuts. The quality of the facilities largely depends on what your major is and where most of your classes are located. Although UI will claim “tradition” in many of its buildings, the reality is that they’re old and need to be improved.

  • "Scum": Nickname for The Summit bar.

  • DI: The Daily Iowan, the student newspaper. It arrives on every students' doorsteps Monday-Friday and does the news every night at 9:30 p.m. on Channel 17.
  • Dirty Burge: Nickname for Burge Residence Hall.
  • EPB: The English-Philosophy Building. Everyone has at least one class there at some point and it's the least favorite building on campus. Built during the hippie era, it's made of solid concrete brick to be riot-proof-very ugly.
  • FAC: "Fridays After Class;" usually 3 p.m.-8 p.m. on Fridays when students head to the bars that have very cheap drink specials.
  • FSG: Facilities Services Group, the organization that maintains the University campus.
  • HawkID: A student's username to log into UI Web sites.

  • IMU: Iowa Memorial Union, the student union that has a food court, conference room, and the bookstore.

  • Ped Mall: The Pedestrian Mall, the heart of downtown Iowa City; lots of bars restaurants and shops are located here.
  • The Res: The beach along Coralville Lake where students relax during the warmer months of the year.
  • SA: Studio Arts. After the flood destroyed the arts campus, classes have been moved to an old Menards Building. The SA bus takes you out there.
  • TA: Teacher's assistant. Usually graduate or PhD students, they will be the ones leading your discussion sections and will be your main resource for help in huge lectures that don't allow one-on-one time with the professor.
  • UBill: Your University bill. It reports your tuition and class costs, and you can charge books, food, and supplies to it from any campus location.
  • UIHC: University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics; one of the best in the nation.
  • UISG: University of Iowa Student Government, the students who represent the student body to the University Administration.
Traditions
  • Dance Marathon: A fundraiser sponsored by the UI and Greek community to raise money for cancer patients at the UIHC. Students spend months raising money and chilling outside of the bars with cans, and their reward is a 24-hour dance party in the IMU.
  • Football Pre-Games: Everybody, from the smallest children to the elderly, are out showing their Hawkeye pride before football games. Whether that involves alcohol or not is up to you, but if you're sleeping in instead of getting pumped up for the game, expect to be ragged on by your friends.
  • Homecoming Week: Basically, there's a large party every night during Homecoming Week. Many head out to bars or house parties, and the week culminates in a parade sponsored by the Greek houses and features various floats and famous UI alumni.
  • Jake's on Your 21st Birthday: Jake's has become a staple for UI students when they are able to legally drink. The bar offers 21 pitchers of beer for $21 on your 21st birthday.
  • Weeks of Welcome: During the first weeks of classes, the University, along with Iowa City, provides many different events to welcome students back to campus. Some of the events include a city-wide barbecue, a fireworks show along the banks of the Iowa River, and stations where new students can get basic information about campus and classes.
Urban Legends
  • Burge Residence Hall-Burge is said to have the most STDs of any college dorm in the nation. Also, Playboy named it one of the best places to get laid in the '90s.
  • False Alums-Ashton Kutcher, Tom Brokaw, and Tom Arnold are all said to be UI alum. They attended, but they all dropped out before graduating.
  • Slater, Floor 9-Legend has it that a student jumped to his death from the ninth floor. Even since, students have reported hearing footsteps, screaming, and some have seen the young man's ghost walking late at night with an ax.
  • The Black Angel-A statue at Oakland Cemetery on the north side of Iowa City is allegedly haunted. It is said that if you kiss the angel's feet, you will die within seven years. Many students go there on Halloween night to try it out.
Favorite Things To Do
There are a lot of fun things to do on campus, but it sometimes takes some hunting to find. Students can workout or play basketball or volleyball at the Field House. They can also workout at Fitness East and the fitness centers in Currier, Mayflower, and Hillcrest. If athletics don't sound interesting, then Hancher Auditorium has many plays, musicals, and concerts year-round. If you're just looking for a place to hang out with your friends, then dorm lounges and the IMU are great. When the weather is nice, students love hanging out on the grass in the Pentacrest or playing Frisbee in Hubbard Park. UI seems to be its own little city inside of a college campus. Students can do anything from working out, to grabbing some food, to seeing a movie; that is, after they finish their studying, of course.
