2 College Freshman

Drug Safety: We are ranked as the "number one party school" and people are embracing that stereotype and running with it. The peer pressure isn't bad, the bad part is when you hear people say "I live in Iowa City- of course I get wasted every weekend." our reputation has become the new form of peer pressure.

2 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: Alcohol is a big deal around here. Not sure about drugs

4 College Student

Drug Safety: The school has a party reputation so I think some freshmen feel the need to live up to the hype but the culture and atmosphere promote academics and safety above all and therefore the students soon learn to "party" in moderation or not at all if they want to be successful, and they do.

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: I never feel pressured to do anything, and I never really hear anything about drugs besides alcohol.

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: I really never hear of people getting arrested for smoking weed, I mostly just hear about people getting in trouble with alcohol so i think that could be changed.

Alcohol can be quite prevalent on weekend nights—sometimes it seems like the only thing to do at UI is drink. However, this is just not true. Most students prefer a drink on the weekends, but only some students drink enough to be noticeably drunk. Cops will often enter a house party or bar to look for underage drinkers, and tickets run $100 for a first offense. Like most other college campuses, there are a few students who choose to use illegal drugs. Some students say they are prevalent around campus, while others say they haven’t seen them at all, so it all depends on what kind of crowd you hang out with. While UI does a good job enforcing the law, drugs do exist. Overall, it’s something you’ll probably only encounter if you try to seek it out.

The most prevalent drugs on campus are marijuana and crystal meth. It is not uncommon to see kids smoking in their rooms or secretly at a party. However, even if you notice this going on, there is little to no peer pressure to join. If you are caught with an illegal substance, the city and the University do not tolerate it, and will give out the harshest punishments possible—even to first-time offenders.
