Off-Campus Dining: Many restaurants on Green St. Prices not bad but I'd rather use my meal plans than spend money.

1 College Freshman

Weather: Terrible weather. Up to -40 degrees F. Classes never canceled due to weather.

2 College Freshman

Campus Housing: Very expensive for the meal/housing plan

3 College Freshman

Athletics: I don't attend many football games, but basketball is big here

4 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: Many RA's don't care. Those who do are usually oblivious.

3 College Freshman

Majors: Could be more helpful in getting students involved.

5 College Freshman

Diversity: This University accepts all no matter race, ethnicity, priority of language. This campus is very diverse.

3 College Freshman

Health & Safety: We have had a lot of occasions where students are getting robbed as they enter their own apartments or dorms. We have had theft situations also within the dorms so these issues need to be addressed.

3 College Freshman

Nightlife: Transportation is always open for students through safe rides. The weekends is very hard to find someone that can actually walk in a straight line. The parties here do get out of hand sometimes

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: Certain dorms are convenient due to its proximity to the gyms or even the main quad. Social atmosphere just depends on if you take advantage of all the social programs that happen within the dorm.

Academics: Offers a lot of classes for my major but just wish there was less of an emphasis on farm animals and more on exotic species

Transportation: Buses run on certain schedules, if had a car you would be able to leave and return when ever you pleased rather than waiting on a bus

3 College Freshman

Computers: Laptop is absolutely needed for college life

4 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: Within the dorms it is safe and secure due to access cards

3 College Freshman

Greek Life: Not a big fan but the Greek life is very social

3 College Freshman

Weather: During winter, Urbana is not the place to be.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: If security and more variety were offered I believe a lot more students would live off campus.

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: Could be better for the amount of money it costs.

4 College Freshman

Academics: I love the academia at this school

4 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: I like the atmosphere because I'm not the city type.

Athletics: I don't participate in them so I don't know much about it.

4 College Freshman

Weather: I'm used to the cold winters

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: Drinking is a large part of the culture here but people know how to be smart about it and there are so many resources available if there are ever any issues. At the same time, there are so many students here that if you are not into drinking or going out one night, there is always someone who will stay in with you. The students here have the best school/social balance I have seen because we are very studious but we love to have fun!

Transportation: Coach busses run from Champaign to the Chicago suburbs daily and multiple times on the weekends so students can travel home and back whenever they would like for a decent price and convenience. There is also a train station right off campus that students can take to the city or anywhere else that it may run. Busses on campus are great but get very busy in the winter.

One might expect some tentative and even negative opinions about any school, but this is truly not the case here at U of I. Students are proud of U of I’s history, proud of is academic accomplishments, proud of the social opportunities it offers, and, most of all, they are proud to be alumni. For so many students to view their choice to come here as an unequivocally good one is a fantastic testament to the University’s strength.

Of course students here have plenty to complain about—the weather, the parking, the Greek social scene, the rural location. But all things considered, the positive points of the U of I experience tipped the scale—the University’s academic excellency, the safety, the social atmosphere, the athletic tradition, the city’s excellent transportation system. Some students admitted that they had a hard time adjusting, that they occasionally wished they had made another decision—but in the end, they were all happy to be here. The most encouraging fact was that so many people mentioned that they were leaving as better people, more knowledgeable, eclectic, and better equipped to navigate through life. University of Illinois students do not just leave with a piece of paper in their hands, they leave with a wealth of experience that is not easily rivaled—and, for in-staters, without enormous debt burdens to face when they graduate.
