The UGA buses run efficiently and are a great way to get around UGA’s sprawling campus. Students who don’t have a parking permit can take the Athens City Transit buses to and from campus for free by scanning their UGA IDs. The buses usually require a long wait, and it’s just a bad situation for all students when it’s hot and crowded. Often, in the ten minutes before any given class starts, the buses become a very hot commodity--you may even get on a bus to only immediately hop off because there just isn’t enough space. If you don’t have a car, try to bum rides from your friends. The cabs here can be a little pricey, and even a bit shady, but if you need a ride home from someone who is slightly less buzzed than you, then our cabbies will do just fine.

Having Hartsfield airport an hour and a half away is convenient for out-of-staters and anyone going abroad or on spring break trips. Students routinely find departing flights to just about any destination from Atlanta. Getting to the airport is not really complicated. Every weekend there is someone going home to the Atlanta metro area, so it is super simple to hitch a ride when needed. Overall, UGA is so centrally located, and the downtown area so close, that it is easy to get by without your own set of wheels, at least for a few years.

Facts & Statistics

Best Ways to Get Around Town
  • Athens is a car-friendly and bike-friendly town. Downtown parking is limited, so carpooling is a good idea if you're going in a group. Bikes are great for getting around quickly, and many major roads have bike lanes.
  • The bus is the main option for people choosing public transportation.
  • On campus, it's sometimes faster just to walk rather than catch what is sure to be a crowded bus.
Best Ways to Get to the Airport
  • A cab ride to the airport costs $90.
  • AAA Airport Express offers a regularly scheduled shuttle service between Atlanta and Athens. The van can drop you off at various hotels, and costs $30 per person each way. AAA airport express also offers group rates. (404) 767-2000
  • Atlanta Arrangements has 10-passenger vans or minibuses available with seating for up to 22 people. This service costs $250-$350. (404) 443-5959
  • Daytime Transportation Inc. also offers transportation for groups of 10-15. (770) 939-2337
