Scholarships: While there are many scholarships offered, many of them do not meet the needs of the students that go there.

I found myself having to take out loans and research grants and scholarships just to stay in school

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: There is a pretty good number of scholarships available at UF

Facilities: Extremely Diverse – No matter what your interests are, there is always a group for you on campus. There is literally a group for everything from juggling to automotive engineering. You don't even have to worry about finding the groups for yourself! All you have to do is utilize IDEAL. The people there will help you find a group that fits your interests. On the off chance that you don't find a group for you, it's also extremely easy to make your own! Just get a group of friends and register with the university.

Facilities: There are tons of recreational activities to become involved with. with UF campus life, you really do feel part of a big family. Campus life is in my opinion one of the greatest experiences a college student can have. And there are tons of opportunities to get more involved with your career choice both on and off campus. I am on my second internship as a freshman already! UF really allows you to just put yourself out there and dive in to the next chapter of your life.

Off-Campus Dining: There are plenty of hangout, good-eat spots off campus. From Cantina, Mochi, and Schlotzky's to Chuey's, Ale house, and Copper Monkey. There are too many great places to count on two-hands! The Reggae Shack is one of my favorite places. They have delicious caribbean food, and the environment you can only get here in Gainesville. Places to eat around here range from relatively cheap to moderate by today's standards. Overall, I love the bounty of options available around Gainesville.

Facilities: UF's campus life is like no other. The student union known as the Reitz is very modern filled with many students working hard, at one time, and playing hard the next. There are fast food joints, places to study, convention rooms, an art gallery, and a very popular hangout arcade/games area. There are so many organizations to join, and there are always fun activities and events going on across campus.

Nightlife: Always Busy – Gainesville is always busy including at night but I have not yet experienced it all myself.

Parking: There is plenty of parking, but you must have a permit.

3 College Freshman

Transportation: RTS buses run every 15 minutes on weekdays, and every hour on weekends. Use the app for maximum efficiency.

Local Atmosphere: Gainesville has a decent nightlife with a few clubs and bars scattered throughout midtown and downtown. However, there is not much to do outside of that.

4 College Student

Nightlife: It's pretty good I guess. I didn't go out much so I don't have much to say about it.

Campus Dining: The dining halls have pretty good hours except for the face that they don't open till 10:30 on saturdays and sundays which is kind of annoying for those of us that don't sleep late. The food is decent, nothing spectacular but edible enough. They always have a sandwich making area and cereal if you don't want what they're serving. The food they make as a whole is pretty oily. I don't know why, but they seem to dump it on there.
There are quite a few options for restaurants though which is nice. There's Einstein, Chick-fil-a, Subway, Starbucks (everywhere), Pollo tropical, Moes, Croutons, Panda Express, Pizza Hut, Burger King and a couple others.

Local Atmosphere: Gainesville is not exactly a huge town. Everything is pretty spread out which makes it more difficult to go to the store or even to hangout at the mall. The people are nice, but it's just not very big or a 'happening' place.

Athletics: Sports at the University of Florida are a huge deal. Basically, the entire student body gets involved..especially the football. The gyms are great, lots of facilities for everyone, not just the athletes to use.

Guys & Girls: I find that a lot of what you will see at UF are students in greek life. For example, if you go out to bars in our main strip called midtown you won't find the nerdy guitar playing "hipster," you will find a preppy fraternity boy who likes beer. Around campus a lot of girls like to dress comfortable in what I call the "sorority" look consisting of running shorts, nike shoes, a "frat" tank, but a fully made up face with curled hair. Others, like myself, prefer to dress in clothes that actually exude my personality from floral maxi skirts to high waisted shorts. UF has a variety of students and anyone can find someone or something to suit their taste. There is no one type on campus, we just think we all see one type.

Scholarships: I really struggled with financial aid for the upcoming year. Many of the required deadlines are not announced and it makes me upset that I missed out on something I deserved because my school didn't feel the need to advertise their requirements properly. I've never had a problem before, but they really disappointed me. While I am at fault for missing the deadline, they are at fault for causing many other students each year to miss out on the one thing that allows them to stay at this fantastic university. I suggest checking up with the financial aid office at the beginning of each semester to write down important deadlines so that these things do not happen to you. Failing to check up on deadlines is not worth losing money to go to school. It is also definitely not worth the hassle now of applying for new scholarships and dealing with dead ends in regards to financial aid.

Off-Campus Dining: There are fantastic and eclectic options that fit all tastes. Vegetarians, meat eaters, and even vegans can find something they will love. A lot of local restaurants in Gainesville pride themselves on using locally grown organic ingredients which I really appreciate because it's better for my health and the environment. While chain restaurants may exist at the University of Florida branching out and trying something new is worth it. If you're looking for a real Gainesville/UF experience try The Top. Everyone can find something they will like and it's priced well enough that you get good food without breaking your bank.

3 College Freshman

Greek Life: If you're into that kind of scene, then it's great, but it can be very divisive on campus. They have a tendency to run the major organizations of campus which can get very frustrating and is often unfair.

3 College Freshman

Health & Safety: The heart of campus in most cases is safe, but it is never good to walk alone at night. We frequently get updates alerting us of crimes that have happened on or near campus. It's good to know what's going on, but I'd like there to be less to report about. Petty theft, especially bike theft, sometimes occur as well.

4 College Freshman

Transportation: Public transportation is very good with many buses and late night transportation with a service called S.N.A.P. Parking however and parking decal costs are very expensive and inconvenient.

4 College Freshman

Nightlife: There are plenty of options for students who are under the age of 21 as well as options for those who are 21 and over. There is a nice variety for everyone on different days of the week.

Campus Strictness: The staff on campus is always looking out for the student's safety, however sometimes the RA's will choose to look the other way if they know that the residents are not doing anything to put themselves or others in danger. Also, they are very accommodating for treating their students like adults and letting them handle their consequences without getting family involved.

4 College Sophomore

Facilities: Excellent - clean, beautiful campus, libraries are top notch, athletic centers are state of the art.

4 College Sophomore

Transportation: Bus service is excellent and Gainesville is an extremely bicycle friendly town.

3 College Sophomore

Majors: I am still trying to decide which career path to choose. If I stick with broadcasting I think I should be able to find a job.

Some schools have certain advantages over others. Small schools give a feeling of community; large schools have lots of resources; private schools are ripe for close academic relationships with faculty; and state schools offer a good value. Well, UF is not your typical state school, and Gainesville is certainly not your stereotypical small town. Because this place is so big, it has all of the libraries, dorms, athletics, courses, clubs, and services you could want at a good price. But if you put forth just a little effort, you’ll find that the University also has more compassionate, down-to-earth professors, locals, and students that any small, private school could ever dream of having.

The best thing about going to a school like UF is that whatever you want to accomplish in life, it is probably obtainable through going to this school. You will never have to worry about not fitting in with anyone because the campus is a huge melting pot. Students are never bored on campus because there is literally always something to do with friends both on or off campus. And who wouldn't want to go to a school where the immense amount of school pride is literally unexplainable? It sure is great to be a Florida Gator.
