College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: I don't go off campus much, so I can't say for certain.

Transportation: The bus line goes to the major areas of gville, but the farther from campus you want to go, the less likely it is to find a bus. You personally don't need a car, but it's good to find someone who does have a car.

Nightlife: Midtown is convenient and always alive.

Scholarships: UF is generally stingy, but I got merit money.

Health & Safety: According to the UF Alert texts, not much goes on.

Drug Safety: I don't really pay attention

Off-Campus Dining: Not many discounts, it is very costly to dine out. And many places require your own transportation & is not in close proximity to campus.

Campus Housing: I very much dislike on-campus housing.

Academics: The curriculum is hard and I can't find the major that is just right for me. I am currently in between Biology and Health Science, doing a dual degree but still not feeling fulfilled with both/either of these majors.

Weather: I hate the drastic change from almost-snowing to beach weather.

Greek Life: Greeks are viewed as people who are able to publicize their financial status. Many Greeks have a chapter house (Intrafraternal, Panhellenic), but the chapters in the Multicultural Greek Council do not. Panhellenic isn't for me, it is too expensive, so I rushed with the MGC. So far, two semesters after rushing, I was not accepted to the MGC sororities I have rushed. It's tough to get in.

Drug Safety: I have only seen people part take in drinking alcohol and never in public.

Nightlife: If you are not part of the Greek Life then the nightlife in Gainesville sucks

Majors: Your essay is the most important for admission into UF

Off-Campus Dining: You need a car to do anything within a reasonable amount of time.

Campus Strictness: UF is a dry campus, so you cannot drink anywhere within campus grounds.

3 College Freshman

Diversity: The majority of the student body is white (non Hispanic), and the majority of the international students are Chinese and Indian.

Local Atmosphere: The problem is that the majority of parties at UF, are in fraternities so if you don't participate in the Greek life then your nightlife is lacking.

Athletics: The Southwest gym has everything you want in a gym plus more. With an indoor running track it covers your every need.

Off-Campus Housing: Although I have looked at off campus housing, I did not live off campus this year and I cannot say much about the pros and cons of doing so. However, I can say that after having looked, prices do vary. Most places include parking. Most places (if you get a 4 bedroom) end up being cheaper than on campus housing.

4 College Senior

Diversity: I'm Asian, so non-Asians tend to look past me since Asian people usually just hang out with each other.

Nightlife: It's good for people over 21 for sure. However, the scene gets old as your four years are coming to an end.

Some schools have certain advantages over others. Small schools give a feeling of community; large schools have lots of resources; private schools are ripe for close academic relationships with faculty; and state schools offer a good value. Well, UF is not your typical state school, and Gainesville is certainly not your stereotypical small town. Because this place is so big, it has all of the libraries, dorms, athletics, courses, clubs, and services you could want at a good price. But if you put forth just a little effort, you’ll find that the University also has more compassionate, down-to-earth professors, locals, and students that any small, private school could ever dream of having.

The best thing about going to a school like UF is that whatever you want to accomplish in life, it is probably obtainable through going to this school. You will never have to worry about not fitting in with anyone because the campus is a huge melting pot. Students are never bored on campus because there is literally always something to do with friends both on or off campus. And who wouldn't want to go to a school where the immense amount of school pride is literally unexplainable? It sure is great to be a Florida Gator.
