Local Atmosphere: School Pride at Its Best – In my time as a college student and speaking with other college students it becomes clear that every student develops a great sense of pride in where they attend. No better the case then here at the University of Florida, where Orange and Blue are almost the only colors worn by nearly 50,000 students each day in and around Gainesville. Along with school pride, there are many nice places to eat, and great outdoor activities to be a part of in Gainesville Florida.

Overall Experience: GATOR NATION! Aside from getting used to buses when you come from a place where you use your car everyday, UF is the best! I love it! Most of the people are always nice and extremely helpful. If you are new, and you ask for directions, they will point you to the right direction, and some would even walk you there! Being a gator automatically creates a bond between you and your fellow classmates regardless of your background. Professors are the best and are always willing to help you out within limits. I wouldn't change a thing about my experience. If I had to do it all over again, I will become a gator again, and again, and again.

Off-Campus Dining: Dinning options off-campus are several and none of them are too far away from the campus life. However, the variety is mostly among different dinning options and flavors, but not necessarily cultural wise. Diversity is more among chain restaurants such as italian vs mexican, but not authentic foods. But, there are a lot of options even though they are mostly chain. In university alone, you have plenty of choices you can walk to besides the options within campus. Not too bad for a college town.

Transportation: Buses and Walking Are BEST! Transportation options include the bus, buying a parking permit, and walking. For those that live near, walking is great since there are apartment and the doorms that are very close to wherever you need to go on campus. The buses are great! They have buses coming every 5 minutes or so and they are super quick to get you where you need to go, which leviates the whole waking up an hour early just to get to class on time. The parking is useless for someone like me that lives close enough to campus, but not able to park in normal parking because I am an undergraduate student. For those undergrads that live far away, it works because they can do half the distance on their own car and then just park and walk the remainder of the distance or get on the bus and finish the rest. Therefore, for me, it is better to take the bus straight from my apartment complex and walk to class from the bus stop.

College Freshman

Academics: As of right now I am unsure because I'm only taking my core classes.

Health & Safety: I have never been unsafe on Florida's campus because the police and security is very strict. Also, I use the buddy system where ever I go.

Weather: Be Prepared for Anything! It can be 20 degrees in the morning and 70 by the afternoon in the winter, so be sure to always dress in layers! Also ALWAYS have an umbrella ready in the summer, it will rain at a moment's notice!

Campus Housing: Nothing Special, but Definitely Liveable – The dorms are clean and pretty much how I expected them to be. I never had to wait for a shower and they were always clean, which was nice.

3 College Student

Facilities: Lot of Places to Go! The campus offers a huge variety of dining options and places to study, most of which are open very late and are perfect for the college lifestyle!

Parking: Parking at UF is quite horrible. There are more students and faculty with cars than spots available. Parking tickets are given out daily and towing is frequent. A car is definitely necessary for getting around Gainesville, but the regional bus system is excellent. Parking decal are given out on the basis of how many credits a student has taken. Specific decals can make finding a parking spot easy or difficult. Some kids find themselves parking long distances from their home and in order to get a spot.

Athletics: GO GATORS – The University of Florida is home of the Florida Gators. We are well known for winning football, basketball, volleyball, and gymnastic championships. A large amount of our atheletes go Pro and have successful careers. Gator fans are some of the most loyal fans around. The football stadium on game days is bursting with fans and the games can be very intense. People camp out days before the actual sporting event just to get great seats. School spirit is evident year round. Almost every student wears our school colors, orange and blue, daily. The athletic facilities have been recently renovated so they are high quality and very modern. There are plenty of fields for impromptu soccer, Frisbee, football, and rugby games.

Guys & Girls: A large population of the guys and girls on campus are involved in sororities and fraternities. There are a ton of school organizations to join to it is not essential to go greek in order to have a social life. Girls and guys on campus dress pretty casual and weather appropriate since it is very hot in Florida. Girls are usually wearing tank tops, sandals, dresses, skirts, etc. While guys often wear shorts and t-shirts. Lots of guys wear sandals due to the hot weather. Everyone owns a pair of sunglasses. Dating amongst the guys and girls on campus can be pretty scandalous depending on who is involved in the relationship. There is a decent amount of intellectual guys that are great in their relationships. Social life at UF largely consists of house parties and going to the bars and clubs located downtown. Downtown Gainesville is very diverse and can be cute and intimate at night depending on where you chose to go.

Facilities: Everyone is Gator fan. It becomes this enormous family of gators. From the alumni to the freshman everyone loves and supports the teams. It's kinda of contagious!

Campus Dining: Good Variety – There is pretty much everything you can think of on campus. From Taco bell to smoothies there is something to please every one. there are 2 dining halls and both serve pretty tasty food. There are starbucks on every block. and you can use your meal plan anywhere on campus.

Facilities: The city is built around the campus. Every building made out of red bricks brings an endering nature to the campus. There are trees every where and they are the perfect accesory to the campus.

Overall Experience: Like Asher Roth said, "I love college." That is the only way to describe it. At first it seems like a bad thing as your adjusting to being away from home and not seeing your friends a lot. Studying sucks, but when you make that new group of friends that understand you and you honestly enjoy spending hours with. College becomes your new home, and when you actually go home all you want to do is go back to college.

Drug Safety: Again this is college. Alcohol is around and not hard to get, people drink and get drunk but it does not ruin lives. College teaches you one thing, and that is how to handle your alcohol and learn when to say you have had to much. It is a learning experience once more.

Guys & Girls: Social Life – The University of Florida is like most colleges. Social life is based around the Greek community. Greek life is the social life, Greeks are the ones that are having the most socials or "parties" and are usually the ones having the most fun. Beyond the fun its also one of the top ways for networking when it comes to workforce. Since the alumni help out when it comes to finding jobs. Social and Greek life are one and without it college would not be the same. You learn so much and experience what college really is by being in one.

Off-Campus Housing: Becoming More Pet Friendly – As of now, there are too many apartments and not enough tenants. In some cases, it leads to seemingly great deals when signing a lease, while in other cases, the landlords appear desperate and don't hold to what was promised (e.g. pet-friendly apartments). There are several options though, including renting a house or living alone. Rent is still pretty high compared to other states' college towns. Fortunately, a string of apartment complexes allow adopted pets to live in their apartments for free.

Athletics: University of Florida is obviously very sports-oriented with an awesome overall athletics program and some of the most enthusiastic fans I've ever seen. The whole city (students and non-students alike) revolves around UF football. However, a downside is that because there are so many students and football is so popular, there is a loterry drawing for season football tickets -- not all students will receive tickets. The more credits you've completed, the grater your chance of winning. There is also an excellent athletic program for recreational activities. There are lively rec teams for any sport and a top-notch gym with all the facilities you could need. It's open late and free for students.

Campus Housing: A Few Awesome Dorms, Some Average – Most dorms are your stereotypical, average college dorm. However, there are a few that are awesome. Hume is generally only for honors students, and mostly incoming honors freshmen live there, but it's an awesome place. I guess they figure honors students are mature enough to live a co-ed lifestyle, so the each floor has both males and females. The rooms are suite-style, which means two people to a room, and one bathroom per two rooms. Your suitemates/bathroom-mates will always be the same gender, so don't worry about that. You also get a walk-in closet, and weekly maid service to clean your bathroom. Because it's an honors dorm, some of the kids can be a little nerdy, but they're all really nice, and there are also a lot of those really cool smart kids. Lakeside is also a great dorm because it is apartment-style (4 bedrooms, living room, kitchen, 2 bathrooms), but the downside to that is that it is further than most dorms from the area where most classes are. However, there is a bus specifically for Lakeside residents. For upperclassmen, the Keys are a great apartment-style dorm with an excellent location near the stadium.

Off-Campus Dining: Gainesville Has the Best Food! One of my favorite things about attending UF and living in Gainesville is the food. Gainesville is very much a college town, and, accordingly, many businesses focus on students. The local favorite pizza place is Satchel's. They have the best pizza in the Southeast and a cool, indie atmosphere. The local Tropical Smoothie Cafe is open 24 hours. Steamers is located just across from campus on University Ave, and they have excellent curry. Their affiliate restaurant, Buddha Belly, is a more complete, full-service version of Steamers, and is located only about 10 minutes further. For dessert, Lollicup, Mochi, and Red Mango are bubble tea and yogurt shops open late to fit the college lifestyle.

Transportation: Commuting Best Option – Most students either drive to Hillsborough Community College or take the bus. I choose to drive to school because parking is relatively easy to find depending on when your class is.

4 College Sophomore

Computers: Hillsborough Community College has many computers in the libary and in the computer labs on campus. The library computers are available to all students, and are easily accessible. Students are able to print 15 pages in the library in a single visit. Overall, the computers are reliable and fast.

3 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: Safe Environment – Hillsborough Community College has few police officers around the campus, however they are alert at all times. I attend the brandon campus, which is a relatively small campus with no crime that I am aware of. I attend school between the hours of 930am-2pm, and I feel safe walking on campus.

Some schools have certain advantages over others. Small schools give a feeling of community; large schools have lots of resources; private schools are ripe for close academic relationships with faculty; and state schools offer a good value. Well, UF is not your typical state school, and Gainesville is certainly not your stereotypical small town. Because this place is so big, it has all of the libraries, dorms, athletics, courses, clubs, and services you could want at a good price. But if you put forth just a little effort, you’ll find that the University also has more compassionate, down-to-earth professors, locals, and students that any small, private school could ever dream of having.

The best thing about going to a school like UF is that whatever you want to accomplish in life, it is probably obtainable through going to this school. You will never have to worry about not fitting in with anyone because the campus is a huge melting pot. Students are never bored on campus because there is literally always something to do with friends both on or off campus. And who wouldn't want to go to a school where the immense amount of school pride is literally unexplainable? It sure is great to be a Florida Gator.
