3 College Freshman

Academics: Although the school is well known for having excellence in academia, it will not seem that way for the first couple of years. I am a Freshman, every class I've had here is online or taught by a student. Online classes are extremely hard to keep up with and should not be allowed for fulltime students in my opinion. I feel that online classes should be reserved for students that have families and fulltime jobs or students with disabilities. However, UF enrolls most of its students in online classes because they enroll about 2-3 thousand students per class and as you know, only about 30 students can fit in a classroom if it is not in a lecture hall. In my opinion, UF "sets up" freshman to fail. They want to weed out as many people as possible with as little effort as possible. Furthermore, every other class I've had has been taught by a fellow student. This is absolutely ridiculous. I am not paying to go to this institution that is supposedly "the best university in the US" to be taught by someone that is the same age as me. The problem with student teachers is that they are very inexperienced and do not clarify many things. My chemistry "teacher" does not show up, does not say anything about assignments or due dates, and does not post anything on the website to let the students know about tests or due dates. My overall experience at UF has been very very poor due to the stress from teaching myself all the courses I've been in. It's absolutely awful and I understand why everyone says they only come here for the football.

Health & Safety: There are multiple blue emergency buttons around campus, but sometimes they are hard to spot. I do not walk on campus at night, there is definitely not enough light. Although there are several police units in Gainesville, most of them are scouring midtown and downtown to give DUI's or bust up parties. They aren't super concerned about on-campus safety in my opinion. Most of the time, I feel the police are mainly there to serve against me, not for me. They only give tickets and tow your car.

Weather: Fairly Nice – There really hasn't been a lot of rain or anything like that. I'm used to and like hot weather so that is great for me.

5 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: Not Strict – The campus police are strict about Bicylcists and such but not really about other things. A party campus.

2 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: Not Much – There are not really that many cheap but good places to eat right around campus

3 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: Drug Scene – The drug scene at UF isn't really big at all. Recently, UF has banned tobacco and smoking on campus. Also, you are not able to drink publicly on campus unless you are the age of 21. Of course there is always underage drinking going on, but police are very strict when it comes to it.

Campus Housing: It is a great experience to live on campus. I have been living on campus for two years and it has been fantastic. The good thing to do is research and choose your favorite dorms before you pick where you want to live. Depending where your dorm is, establishes what kind of social life that you will have.

5 College Sophomore

Campus Dining: There are so many restaurants and dining halls on campus that it is impossible to eat. The good thing is that they are spaced out. The only bad thing is that all the dining hall close before midnight and the only thing that would be open a little later would be Starbucks. The have various different meal plans and ways that you could put your meals on deferment and pay for it at the end of the semester.

Facilities: Orange and Blue – At the University of Florida, we bleed Orange and Blue. The are over 800 organizations that students can get involved in. There is a lot of tutoring and other help to guide and study with students to help them pass test. There are things going on every day at school, so there is no reason one shouldn't have a social life at UF.

5 College Sophomore

Greek Life: Greeks inspire the social life at our school. There are so many social Greek organizations, as well business Greek organizations. Greek houses are only giving to the Greek organizations that can afford it and was already built on campus when the school started.

Off-Campus Housing: There are a lot of choices of off campus housing. There is a variety of apartment choices all over the city for different prices and value.

Overall Experience: A school this large has so many options to narrow your social sphere and really settle in socially and academically

5 College Sophomore

Nightlife: Something for Everyone, Always – There are endless options at UF for whatever your interests are

4 College Sophomore

Computers: Printing Labs Get Crazy at Times – For general computer use there are plenty of options. However, UF has a free printing lab (which is great) but it gets really crowded at times

4 College Sophomore

Facilities: Inside Scoop – Many student organizations to choose from, and many opportunities to take part of. You can start an organization on your own or with a group of people. Students can get very involved and it is a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: Professors are great overall, some teach you the book, some teach you through real life problems. Registration is flexible and gives the upperclassmen more freedom. Workload can pile up if you do not keep up, but that is normal.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: Many selections available, broad range of prices and distance away from campus. Pros include freedom, living on your own, having your own personal space. Cons extra expenses, and inconvenience. Landlords don't bother you unless you are doing something wrong or have not payed your rent. Some places have garaged parking, others allow you to park outside your door. Many fliers are placed around the school in relation to off-campus housing.

Scholarships: Every time I've gone to financial aid in UF the assistance has been amazing. They actually take interest to helping you out. They take their time and look up all of your information so you can have ease of mind. They realize money is a huge issue, just make sure to visit often.

4 College Freshman

Transportation: RTS System – The bus system at UF is very convenient and easy to use. During the week, the buses run till 4 AM and they constantly run; therefore the longest wait is just around 15 minutes. On Sundays there is a lack of buses though. Thankfully, on Saturdays there is the Later Gator which satisfies any needs for clubs/nightlife. Best of all, completely free to students.

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: Dorms on Campus – You have to come with lowered expectations if you are searching for dorms in college. Thankfully, the dorms at UF are pretty good. It's really simple to make friends and they are all walking-distance to campus.

Weather: So Gainesville during the summer is extremely hot and can be a lot to handle if you are outside all day. Other than that fall is really nice and wind starts to pick up. There are a lot of chilly days during the winter but if you are from up north or mid Florida then you're probably used to it. We tend to get a nice amount of rain but it's very avoidable in the fact that we mostly get rain at night into the morning.

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: Drinking Is Better Than Drugs – The drug scene at UF isn't big at all people really aren't that into doing drugs like that. There are people that do them but it's not a requirement and you won't be looked down upon for not doing them. A lot of people do drink alcohol and it seems that if you have connections then it's very easy to get, but a lot of people don't drink alcohol on campus because UF has a "no toleration" policy for drugs and underage drinking.

3 College Freshman

Greek Life: So there are a lot of different frats and sororities for people to get involved with, there are different religious ones, the divine nine, and other regular sororities. I hate to say that the sororities and fraternities are separated by race but they are. It has more to do with the founders of the sororities than them actually being racist or something. The "divine nine" which are nine frats and sororities founded by African Americans and they are predominantly black where as the rest of the frats and sororities are predominantly white or consist of other races. Either way they are very welcoming to new people and most people on campus are fine with them and don't really care what they do. People aren't forced to join one, and if you never want to deal with them the campus is big enough so that you wouldn't have to. The Greek life is popular for some people they do have fun and it can be time consuming but people can definitely be in one or not and it won't matter, but if you are looking for a sister or brotherhood than they are really great.

3 College Senior

Parking: Cars Are a Luxury – There isn't a whole lot of parking available and decals are hard to get. Students don't really need a car on campus because the bus system runs pretty regularly and services a slew of locations, but cars are a luxury item and more parking would be nice.

5 College Senior

Campus Dining: It Is Great. There are a lot of different options to choose from on campus.

Some schools have certain advantages over others. Small schools give a feeling of community; large schools have lots of resources; private schools are ripe for close academic relationships with faculty; and state schools offer a good value. Well, UF is not your typical state school, and Gainesville is certainly not your stereotypical small town. Because this place is so big, it has all of the libraries, dorms, athletics, courses, clubs, and services you could want at a good price. But if you put forth just a little effort, you’ll find that the University also has more compassionate, down-to-earth professors, locals, and students that any small, private school could ever dream of having.

The best thing about going to a school like UF is that whatever you want to accomplish in life, it is probably obtainable through going to this school. You will never have to worry about not fitting in with anyone because the campus is a huge melting pot. Students are never bored on campus because there is literally always something to do with friends both on or off campus. And who wouldn't want to go to a school where the immense amount of school pride is literally unexplainable? It sure is great to be a Florida Gator.
