Greek Life: How Greek Students Are Viewed by Non-Greeks – Greeks are viewed as generally attractive, ready to party, and overall less intelligent than the student body at-large. Greeks are also viewed as a privileged group--the common line of thinking is that you must be greek to be in student government, to join ACCENT (the speakers bureau), or to become a Cicerone (basically, you have to be greek to do anything prestigious on campus).

Overall Experience: It Is What You Make It – Florida is an amazing school with unlimited opportunities. Really, there's over 900 student organizations! You can reach the stars here, but you have to be motivated to fly your own shuttle. There are no hand outs and no one walks you through the system. You truly have to be an adult and know what you want. There is definitely room to grow and you are surrounded by thousands of friendly faces, so you'll definitely make it.

Weather: Florida is BEAUTIFUL!! It gets cold for maybe a month, but nothing ridiculous. The rest of the time, the weather is absolutely wonderful. You can do pretty much everything outside until the summer, when it is unbearably hot. The campus is beautiful though. You will not find better weather than UF.

Campus Strictness: Hardly Enforced – Because UF is such a large school, you are ultimately responsible for you. It is easy to slip through the cracks and the school is not great at enforcing the rules it has set up. That being said, the school runs very well and students take responsibility for themselves. But you will definitely not be baby sat.

Greek Life: Greek Life is a big part of the social scene at UF. It helps to identify yourself in the cummunity and makes the school seem a lot smaller. You get to meet alot of people. The fraternities have a lot of parties and the sororities have a lot of socials and date functions. During football games is when the greek life really gets active and exciting.

Transportation: Use the Buses – The bus system in Gainesville is very reliable. They run all day and night throughout the campus as well as off campus. They will take you to downtown clubs when you are trying to go out for a fun night in town.

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: It is hard to get a good dorm on campus. Unforutnatly, I signed up for Broward Hall. It is a social dorm but the facilities are terrible. Commmunity style bathrooms and very loud and obnoxious air conditioning units that get used to for sleeping. Most of the dorms are pretty old on campus. The best dorms to get would include Beaty Towers, Springs, or Keys.

3 College Junior

Nightlife: Drink up – The nightlife in Gainesville is pretty upbeat. There is always somewhere to go on any given night depending on what you like to do. The bars around campus are the best places to go and the clubs around the downtown area are pretty sketch.

4 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: Plenty of intelligent good- looking girls and they are generally well dressed. Most guys are well-dressed and good-looking too. Average looking guys get hot girls. Ratio of good-looking girls to guys is like 3:1. Theres a variety of types of guys and girls. Greek life is essential if you want a social life on campus. Relationships don't usually exist in greek life and especially if boy or girl are either a freshman or senior.

Local Atmosphere: Big School Small Town – Gainesville is a small town but it has a huge student population. There are bars right across town but it seems that the same types of people go to them.

4 College Freshman

Facilities: School Pride – Students there LOVE that they are gators. They have a lot of school pride and love their school. It brings everyone closer together.

3 College Freshman

Diversity: Fairly Diverse – There are many different clubs for different races and ethnicities.

4 College Freshman

Health & Safety: Fairly Safe Environment – I feel pretty safe around campus. Police are constantly patrolling the campus and there are free services to drive you around campus at night.

4 College Junior

Academics: Interesting and Always Changing – The professors are always willing to help and you actually use what you learn in a class for future classes as well as in the work world.

Parking: There is not nearly enough parking. Live as close to campus as possible. Living on campus doesn't even guarantee you a spot! You could search for a while. And be VERY aware of parking restrictions- they will ticket you for ANYTHING.

5 College Junior

Athletics: UF is more known for its athletics than its academics. The atmosphere around the school on game day is something everyone should be able to experience. It enhances the student experience in unimaginable ways. There are also tons of ways for non professional athletes to be involved. The rec centers are state of the art, and there's an intramural sport for everyone.

4 College Junior

Off-Campus Housing: I love everything about UF...except the administration. Student fees are constantly being raised, and the students' input is always ignored. However, I have absolutely no complaints about the campus or professors. Dorms are pretty average, but most have been remodeled lately. Dining hall food isn't worth the cost, but there are plenty of other options

5 Recent Alumnus

Greek Life: There are there and are very involved but I live off campus and am not a member so I wouldn't know a whole lot about it.

4 Recent Alumnus

Campus Dining: I do not have a meal plan because I feel that it is too expensive but I think that the food places close too early anyways. I an still in school when they close for dinner.

4 Recent Alumnus

Facilities: They are very nice and we have a lot of libraries but the gym is a little bit difficult to access.

4 College Junior

Weather: Rain Rain – Well, its Florida, so it rains all the time, however, there is not much drainage in some areas of campus. We water campus daily with reclaimed water (treated on the campus itself), so it may be hard for further absorption to occur on truly rainy days. I thought it was just another trend, but the rain-boots you see all the girls wearing around campus ARE actually necessary, not a fashion statement.

2 College Junior

Campus Strictness: No Downloads – Our campus is strict on not allowing any illegal downloads to happen while logged into the school's network. A warning will flash on your computer and you can get kicked out of school if they push it.

5 College Junior

Computers: Over 10 Libraries and Lots of Major Specific Labs – Though the libraries are always packed during finals, there is a 24 hour computer lab, as well as over 10 libraries that are specific to certain fields all over campus. Library hours are extended to 4 am during finals anyway so no worries.

4 College Freshman

Scholarships: Financial Aid is a roller coaster. My first year i got a pretty good package, which I am grateful for because I needed it, but for the upcoming year I am receiving significantly less because they have less to give away. The people who work in Financial Aid are very knowledgeable and willing to help, but the advice I'd give to someone would be to know what you want and need to discuss because they will be ready to answer all of your questions but often times you'll end up feeling like you didn't have enough questions and that they could probably have helped you more if they knew what you wanted to know.

3 College Freshman

Health & Safety: Campus Safety – Make sure your bike is secured and in a place with other bikes, bike theft is common. Campus security heavily enforce the speed limits; a pain but i'm sure it helps keep pedestrians safe. Dorms aresecure so that those who do not belong won't be able to get where they want to go.

Some schools have certain advantages over others. Small schools give a feeling of community; large schools have lots of resources; private schools are ripe for close academic relationships with faculty; and state schools offer a good value. Well, UF is not your typical state school, and Gainesville is certainly not your stereotypical small town. Because this place is so big, it has all of the libraries, dorms, athletics, courses, clubs, and services you could want at a good price. But if you put forth just a little effort, you’ll find that the University also has more compassionate, down-to-earth professors, locals, and students that any small, private school could ever dream of having.

The best thing about going to a school like UF is that whatever you want to accomplish in life, it is probably obtainable through going to this school. You will never have to worry about not fitting in with anyone because the campus is a huge melting pot. Students are never bored on campus because there is literally always something to do with friends both on or off campus. And who wouldn't want to go to a school where the immense amount of school pride is literally unexplainable? It sure is great to be a Florida Gator.
