Local Atmosphere: Fairly Good – Gainesville is built around UF. There are always many things to do and the stores always have coupons.

Weather: It is extremely hot during summers, especially during July. Walking through campus around afternoon can be rather tiring because of the heat. Often times it rains during mid to late afternoon.

Overall Experience: This university is different from any other college I know. The school is very very school spirited. The campus is beautiful and the professors are really nice too. Yes there are plenty of parties here but you have to study! This school isn't easy either. The town is quiet and petite but the locals are friendly I never had a problem.

Off-Campus Housing: Very Very Good! Off housing campus is usually cheaper than staying in dorms. I found an apartment for 400 dollars a month. The apartment was beautiful and in the woods. For the price it was well worth it. Granted you may have to take a bus, but buses here run on schedule.

Off-Campus Dining: Not Much at Campus. There is a few places to eat on campus. However, most are spread out and there isn't much diversity. If you want to get something else you have to go out of campus. If your not familiar with the area you will get lost...

Academics: UF has fantastic academics that rivals any school. Most classes, with exception of beginning gen-Ed courses which can be 100-300 students, are small and offer intimate discussion. With a faculty-student ratio of 20:1, there is plenty of interaction between professors and students.

The professors themselves are regarded highly in their fields and many are doing cutting edge research. My physics professor was on the team that discovered the Higgs Boson at CERN recently and my astronomy professor is highly involved in the NASA Kepler mission.

Additionally, many used to teach at highly regarded universities such as Harvard and Brown before coming here.

Of course, not every professor will be accessible or interesting, but the many incredible ones do outweigh the poor ones.

Overall Experience: Exciting and Unique – The University of Florida has so many friendly people and pretty buildings. The city is very historic and all of the roads and buildings take you back to a past time. Whenever there are events going on they are very organized and fun. The people are very nice and welcoming and just want you to be apart of the scene. So far I love the University of Florida.

Campus Strictness: Not Strict Enough – Strictness is certainly not adequate. Underage drinking and drug use are quite common. There have been instances of police interfering with parties, only to totally disregard any of these problems when in plain sight. Little is done to discourage students from committing these acts. The university also does not monitor the performances of professors to ensure higher quality teaching.

Nightlife: Socializing Is Awesome! Around University of Florida, socializing is wonderful. People normally have parties in their apartments and travel to nightclubs or bars. Transportation, whether or not affiliated with the university, is excellent for reaching certain locations in the night.

4 Recent Alumnus

Computers: The computers are excellent! They are easy to use and connected to fast printers! They have diversity of operating systems as well, including both Macs and Windows.

Athletics: During my transition into college, Tim Tebow had just graduated and the football team took a turn for the worse. The basketball team is pretty awesome. Those games are awesome to go to be.cause everyone gets really into them with all the silly cheers they sing

Health & Safety: Not So Safe – There have been quite a few instances where criminals are loose on campus and students have been robbed or put into a threatening situation. The police need to be more present throughout the night to prevent this from happening.

Overall Experience: So Far So Good.. I have been non-stop busy since I have come to Gainesville, there is so much to do for both fun and for academics. I study a lot, but if I need a change of scenery from my apartment there are plenty of different places to go to study.

4 College Sophomore

Athletics: Everyone Can Get Involved! All of the Division I sports are extremely impressive. What's even more impressive is the school spirit behind every sport. The intramural and club programs are extensive and organized so there is something for everyone who wants to play.

4 College Sophomore

Nightlife: Fun When You Want It – There is Nightlife for all ages, and almost anyone can find something to do. There are always drink specials, and you are guaranteed to bump into some fun friends (or athletes) all over Midtown or Downtown, depending on the night.

3 College Freshman

Academics: Hard but Worth It – UF is obviously one of the most competitive schools in the nation, so that means the work when you get there will be rigorous. It's hard for it's all well worth it.

5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: GATOR CHOMPPP – UF is the greatest university ever! The weather, the people, the teachers, the vast variety of classes, the list goes on & on.

4 College Freshman

Weather: It's Florida, so of course it's going to be hot! It doesn't affect your classes though.

Health & Safety: UF offers a service called SNAP. Instead of walking alone back to your dorm or to the library or anywhere on campus, you can call the SNAP van to come and get you wherever you are and take you anywhere you would like to go on campus. It's great for security since it runs till about 3:00am.

3 College Junior

Drug Safety: People Like to Party – UF is a party school, there is always something going on each and every night. However, most students are very motivated and do not fall into any problems such as hard core drugs or drinking problems.

5 College Junior

Academics: Business Is Best – Being a business major is wonderful because all the classes are availble online if you cannot make it to class. This has given me the opportunity to be able to work and pay for my schooling without losing time or having to take out loans. Also, tutoring tools such as smokin notes, Tutoring Zone and Study Edge (private tutoring) are availble for almost all business classes. Study abroad opportunites are easier for business majors as well.

4 College Junior

Academics: Hit or Miss – Most professors I have had are very involved and interested in the students. All of them are brilliant, but some you can tell are more involved and concerned with their research. I always just use ratemyprofessor.com or ask friends for reccommendations and am able to get the better ones.

4 College Junior

Athletics: Our football games are the highlight of the fall. On game days, all of Gainesville is covered in blue and orange and they are the best days of the year. If you don't play at the varsity level, we also have great competive and non-competitive intramural and club teams for bascially every sport one can play.

3 College Junior

Weather: Florida summers are hot and UF is a big campus. There's a lot of walking/bike-riding in the hot sun. However, the winters are nice and cool but not too cold.

4 College Junior

Drug Safety: Never Seen Drugs on Campus – I don't hang out at parties or bars... probably the wrong person to ask. I've never seen drugs on campus. I've overheard exactly one conversation about marijuana. The only drug I ever hear about regularly is Adderall around finals time.

Some schools have certain advantages over others. Small schools give a feeling of community; large schools have lots of resources; private schools are ripe for close academic relationships with faculty; and state schools offer a good value. Well, UF is not your typical state school, and Gainesville is certainly not your stereotypical small town. Because this place is so big, it has all of the libraries, dorms, athletics, courses, clubs, and services you could want at a good price. But if you put forth just a little effort, you’ll find that the University also has more compassionate, down-to-earth professors, locals, and students that any small, private school could ever dream of having.

The best thing about going to a school like UF is that whatever you want to accomplish in life, it is probably obtainable through going to this school. You will never have to worry about not fitting in with anyone because the campus is a huge melting pot. Students are never bored on campus because there is literally always something to do with friends both on or off campus. And who wouldn't want to go to a school where the immense amount of school pride is literally unexplainable? It sure is great to be a Florida Gator.
