Athletics: The athletic department plays a big role in the community at University of California Santa Barbara. For an example, the average attendance at the UCSB soccer games is 5,500 people. Athletic events like this is not just a game, but an opportunity for the school to come together and unite as one. The university is known for competing in the division 1 level, which is the most competitive division in the NCAA. The fan support and spirit is one of the best in the nation with the power to fill no matter what stadium whether it is Harder Stadium, the Thunder Dome, or Rob's Gym. The athletic department is one of the best in the nation and I am proud and honored to be personally involved.

Although students pout at the absence of a football team, most UCSB varsity teams are frequently winners in their divisions. The big teams that the students seem to recognize are soccer and basketball, which host the largest crowds. The lack of a football team takes away from the much-deserved attention and spotlight from UCSB athletics. However, despite the oblivious students, club and varsity sports are highly competitive and constantly win titles.

Apart from the highly competitive varsity and club teams, most of the student population takes part in intramural sports. Students can sign up with a group of friends and play against other intramural teams. From indoor soccer to inner tube water polo, intramurals are a fun way to get active and meet new people. At the end of each quarter, the UCSB Recreational Sports program hosts intramural finals for various IM sports. While UCSB may lack the typical football atmosphere that often draws in people, students still find a way to channel school spirit across campus, and this can be seen when UCSB plays rivals like Cal Poly.

School Spirit
The lack of a football team carries over into UCSB's overall school spirit, in comparison to some other big, Division I universities. Campus groups, such as the "Gaucho Locos," attend sporting events and do their best to pump up the crowd with tortilla tossing and rowdy cheers.
