Computers: Technology is great in merced. the only thing that uc merced needs to do better is improving the speed of the network.

Computers: It is vital that you have/bring some type of personal laptop or tablet that you can use on campus. I only know of one public computer lab on campus, but I have not explored the campus for any others. They have many computer labs that are used solely for classes, however. There is a printing area in the Library with 10+ computers for students to use for printing any needed documents, and they are open to anybody. Depending on how well your computer handles WiFi, the network can be anywhere from a little slow to pretty fast. Despite its speed, the network is always reliable. I would personally recommend using an Ethernet cable if you want faster network speed. So many people are using the WiFi on their laptops, tablets, and phones that the speed of the network when using an Ethernet cable is usually far better than the WiFi. You can connect to the WiFi in one of two ways: there is a network that requires no password that you can connect to automatically, or there is a network that you can choose manually that requires your Net ID and password to connect. Both are very reliable and work at about the same speed.

Computers: Since i have not been exposed to much of the university, i can not be perfectly correct in my answer. However, the school has wi-fi which is important for student life.

Computers: Computers are accessible in several areas around campus if you don't have one of your own, but having your own computer is much easier, and the internet speed is great and reliable.

UCM places a great value on technology, since it is one of the newest universities and the first UC of the 21st century. Consequently, students have great access to computers and Internet, including high speed wireless Internet available anywhere on campus, as well as connections off campus through the Virtual Private Network (VPN). Additionally, if you do not own your own laptop, there are computer labs located throughout campus—near the dorms, classroom buildings, and library. However, none of these labs is open 24/7; the latest a lab stays open is midnight. The library also loans out laptops for four hours at a time, which have access to Internet. You can stop by the library to easily check one out and then take it anywhere with you during your loan period. You can also renew your time, giving you additional four-hour periods, assuming the library has not run out of the loaner laptops. Unfortunately, the likelihood of the library running out laptops is rather high during finals, so if at all possible, it is suggested you have your own laptop or desktop.

The school's bookstore also provides you with an opportunity to purchase Apple computers at discounted prices. You can buy these computers/laptops either directly in the store or online. Students get a discount because UCM has a partnership with Apple, allowing UCM to sell computers at what Apple calls "Academic Pricing." You can also buy iPods and accessories at a discounted price.
