3 College Senior

Facilities: There is still time for the university to grow and improve each year there is a new building opening so there is more things to be done.

3 College Senior

Health & Safety: It is a beginning university that only opened its doors 9 years ago so it still has time to grow and improve.

5 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: Sexual assault on campus is a big NO-NO! Nobody gets away with it if it ever occurs. Everyone will be supportive if it happens.

5 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: UC Merced is incredible! You honestly won't believe it till you start to attend, because I definitely didn't want to come here. After a while, it quickly grows on you.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: Campus strictness is not bad. No one is treated like a criminal at all; but there are some things that are not lenient.

3 College Sophomore

Greek Life: Greek life here isn't like it is at most schools. It doesn't really matter if you're part of Greek life or not; everyone is accepted.

4 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: The local atmosphere is really good! The only slight problem is that the locals aren't very excited to have a UC here and it's mostly because of funding. On the bright side, Yosemite is very near so we have access to a great scenery. Everything here is accessible!

5 College Sophomore

Facilities: UC Merced is very slept on. No one believes it until they start attending. The academic programs are excellent and professors know you by your first name, even in lectures! Campus life is wonderful. People know each other and if you don't, it's not that hard to get to know people. Overall the school is excellent.

5 College Sophomore

Facilities: Student life on campus is great! Everyone is friendly and people aren't stuck-up at all. We have many little events and fun things to do as well as big events!

5 College Sophomore

Diversity: The school is so diverse it's crazy. You might even think we are the United Nations. Anyway, no one is judged for their different backgrounds.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Dining: The food is good and it varies for a while, but if you're constantly on campus, it becomes the same old thing.

5 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: Honestly, off-campus housing is great! You don't have RA's telling you when it's quiet hours and you are also close to the school and other necessities.

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: It's easy to get financial aid, but if you need more, it's really hard. Very stress-inducing. It makes me want to cry because you always need proof and sometimes you can't give them the proof they need. I need more financial aid, but I keep having to fax documents and it's making me cringe.

5 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: The guys and girls at my school are really cool. Nobody is stuck-up, well nobody that I have encountered. Everyone is really friendly!

5 College Student

Majors: I enjoy being in my clubs because it lets me be myself and interact with people

5 College Student

Majors: MY career goals are to become a social worker for the children in foster care. I am only concerned if there will be any openings.

2 College Student

Scholarships: I honestly have been in a constant argument and fight with the school just to get some funding.

5 College Student

Off-Campus Housing: The off-campus living is very decent, I personally would not pay for it because I like the whole college experience

5 College Student

Campus Strictness: My campus is not that strict there are a few things that they may be somewhat strict on but not a lot

5 College Student

Overall Experience: What makes this school unique is that they help children in foster care get to a better place

5 College Student

Diversity: The diversity is very high and there are many different races and religions as well as sexual orientations. Many believe in their own ways and nobody has an issue with that

5 College Student

Athletics: The club sports are very interesting to watch. I enjoy watching them just about as much as the varsity players

5 College Student

Local Atmosphere: The school and social life is very likable by all students.

5 College Student

Campus Dining: They have very good food and provide many choices. I really enjoy the food

5 College Student

Health & Safety: I really feel as if the campus helps everyone who has had some sort of issues and helps them get to a better place.

There tends to be a fair amount of skepticism about UC Merced, due to its young age. Because the school is located in a fairly small town and only opened its doors a little more than six years ago, there are plenty of students who come to UCM concerned about how established the University actually is and how boring life might be on or off campus. However, students tend to be surprised at what UCM has to offer. It definitely lives up to the UC standard, providing students with research opportunities and leadership positions. Students tend to not only adjust, but eventually come to love the cozy, neighborly atmosphere of the school. Those very accustomed to the busy city lifestyle might be shocked at the smallness of the place, but the general consensus is that there is plenty to do, both on and off campus, and that it is just a matter of exploring.

Ultimately, the University is like any other college in the sense that there will be parties. However, the party scene is not so big on campus, due to its size and the fact that there are not any fraternity or sorority houses. But there is a fair share of off-campus parties. For students more interested in extracurricular activities, UCM provides awesome opportunities, especially since students will have a chance to be at the forefront of many organizations, or even start a new organization or sports team, and create more school traditions. Students agree that by attending UCM, they have the opportunity to lay the foundation for a University with great potential. Plus, the brand-new facilities—including the labs, classrooms, and even the new, clean dorms and restrooms—are an asset to being a young school. Thus, while UCM might not provide one with a typical college experience, due to its smallness and newness, it's definitely possible for a student to have a worthwhile experience here if he or she is willing to get involved with campus life.
