Transportation: Walking Is the Best Choice – Having a car at UCLA is not allowed unless you're a student with an off campus job. There is also no good transportation that will take you around campus. Prepare to walk at least two miles a day.

Off-Campus Housing: Prepare to Pay the Price – Off-campus housing is every bit as expensive as on-campus housing. Prepare to share your bedroom with a friend or maybe even two. These apartments are at least a 15 minute walk form campus, and I feel that they're not usually worth the price you pay.

Local Atmosphere: Westwood Village – Westwood Village is a cute, chic town between the city of Los Angeles and Satan Monica. There is tons of food to be had, but not much nightlife. An extra perk of going to UCLA are frequent celebrity sitings!

Guys & Girls: A Well Dressed Crowd – UCLA is generally known as a college of good looking, well-dressed girls and boys. Everyone on campus is usually dressed well if not stylishly. But everyone is human, and around midterms and finals, the sweatpants come out.

Campus Housing: There Are Pros and Cons – At UCLA, there is no differentiation between freshman housing and upperclassman housing. I find that this is actually very nice, since you get to mingle with a lot of different people who are different years and majors. Housing is nice, but rooms are generally small. In addition, all on campus housing is on a huge hill and is at least a 15 minute walk from campus.

Majors: A Variety of Choices – At UCLA, the Career Center is always having internships fairs; they occur a few times a quarter. I have not participated in an internship, but I have been a researcher in a lab on campus. At UCLA, there are many opportunities for internships, however you might be faced with strong competition for any one position. Pay and responsibilities vary from contract to contract, but every UCLA student is expected to have a strong commitment to their work. I don't plan to find an internship in the future, as I am very happy with my current position doing research with a professor. As a student researcher, I am required to work six hours a week in the laboratory, but these hours may be done at any time during the week. The flexibility in my working hours as well as the proximity of the lab to campus and the valuable research skills I am gaining make finding an internship unattractive. If anything, this just says that there are many opportunities to do jobs other than internships on campus.

Nightlife: Prepare to Party – Nightlife at UCLA is amazing. Usually you can find something you can do any night you're interested, but if you're looking for something close to campus, the only nights that are truly active are Thursday - Saturday; these are frat or apartment parties. The best place to go to a club is in West Hollywood, and on Thursday night, anyone can get in with a college ID. As for transportation, it's easiest if you know someone with a car, but the Blue Line bus is a fairly decent choice, just make sure you don't miss the last bus.

Academics: An Overcrowded University – UCLA is an amazing place to be studying biochemistry, as its Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is often ranked as one of the best in the world. However, due to the large number of undergraduate students in the department, it is often difficult for students to get the classes they need, making it difficult to graduate on time. Furthermore, the counselors that are assigned to chemistry and biochemistry majors see such a large number of people on a daily basis that they are often unavailable for appointments during the week. Yet, UCLA offers incredible opportunities to meet professors that are truly interested in their research and are experts in their field. If you express true interest in a professor's research, he or she is often open to helping you find a position in a research laboratory, which is an amazing opportunity to get hands on experience that I know will help me gain employment later in life.

Scholarships: Its like any other public school. You either qualify or you don't.

Computers: Computer Lab Internet Accessibility – There's computers labs and printers in every department so there's never an issue of looking up information or studying and the wifi stretches far out beyond the campus making it easy to find access to the Internet. There's an array of coffee houses in and out of campus as well.

Academics: I came to ucla hoping to gain a research opportunity not realizing how competitive it is to secure a position. You really have to work yourself from the ground up and I found that for people leaving off campus they really miss a lot. The departments can be a little convoluted, but you can beat the student atmosphere and the quality of education you get at UCLA. Very liberal and not structured so be prepared to use that brain of yours when you study. It's impossible to get through all the resources they offer and the curves can be painful at times.

Computers: Easy Access – Lots of different areas on campus to get to computers. Hidden computer labs all over.

Greek Life: Guys Are Greek – Most big parties occur at the fraternities. If you are a guy (Greek or non-Greek), it is EXTREMELY hard to be let into a fraternity; you either have to be good friends with one of the respective fraternity's brothers, or you must be in that fraternity. Girls are always let in, but guys almost always are seen as invaders, only coming to the frat to steal potential hook-ups. I am non-Greek, but I am dating a guy who is in Sigma Phi Epsilon, and he really loves the laid-back, friendly atmosphere. Most frats are classified by their specific reputation, therefore the brothers of those respective frats are usually judged according to those reputations.

Off-Campus Dining: Food Is Far but Yummy – There are a wide variety of restaurants available near campus. However, parking is a pain if you are driving and walking takes about half an hour if you are venturing into Westwood. Besides the transportation issue, the food is good and the facilities are clean. EVERYONE from UCLA goes to Diddy Riese to grab desert. If you visit or plan to attend UCLA, Diddy Riese is the place to check out. The cookie sandwiches are to-die-for and extremely cheap.

Weather: California Rules – The weather here is almost always ideal. California weather can't be beat.

Athletics: Bruins Are Supportive! UCLA Bruins are very into the football and basketball scene. There is a huge variety of IM sports; UCLA even has a nationally-ranked Quidditch team. The Wooden Center is a great place to work out; you are surrounded by people your own age in a very nice, clean facility with numerous machines, a weight room, treadmills, ellipticals, a rock wall, and many, many classes for which you can sign up (including yoga, kickboxing, and pilates).

School spirit is very prevalent on and off campus. Almost everyone has one article of spirit-wear, and people are definitely proud of where they go to school.

Guys & Girls: Party on Thursdays – More than 40% of the students here are of Asian descent. This is one of the biggest, most sought-after Universities in the nation. If you are looking for a group to which you want to belong, you will find it -- no doubt. There are a lot of hipster kids, frat guys and sorority girls. Parties happen on Thursday nights, which surprised me when I first started here, but it's because most people don't have class on Fridays. Regulations are strict involving noise and alcohol in campus housing, so the flow of alcohol is pretty low there. This is the reason why most guys are in fraternities, because if you want to party/meet girls, you have to be in a frat.

Drug Safety: Drinking Is More Popular – Maybe a little bit of weed smoking here or there. But, not really. People aren't really into doing drugs around here. There's a lot of drinking that goes on though.

4 College Junior

Majors: Most of them you just need to declare as your major. Freshman admissions are major-blind!! So if you pick physics or english your chance of getting in is the same.
Some majors are impacted and you do have to apply but thats less then 5% of the majors.

Parking: Don't Bring a Car – You don't need a car! If you have one, expect lots of parking tickets both by on campus parking and city parking enforcements. Parking is a city-wide problem!

Athletics: Needs Improvement – With awful seasons for the football and basketball teams, spirit has gone down...

2 College Sophomore

Diversity: UCLA can definitely use more diversity in terms of ethnic/racial diversity. But I will say that there are a lot of different religions, political groups, and people with different sexual orientation represented at UCLA. The challenges lay with the working and middle class as tuition continues to increase

4 College Sophomore

Facilities: They Have Everything – UCLA has great facilities. The dorms have lounges and study rooms on every floor. There are so many different libraries and athletic locations. I love that there is always an event at UCLA that attracts a variety of audiences.

Health & Safety: They're on Top of It – UCLA is very good about safety and security. They constantly perform drills via email and practice safety evacuations often. Not only do the police offers patrol, but the employees are frequently looking out for the safety of others as well.

Athletics: UCLA is centered about Football but the basketball is better.

Smack dab in the middle of Los Angeles and on the list of America's top colleges, UCLA is a school for those who want to have a blast while focusing on schoolwork. Although course registration is a battle, classes are crowded, and the registrar is impersonal, students praise the wisdom of their professors and feel that a UCLA degree will open major doors in the job market. The quarter system moves fast and tests tend to sneak up stealthily, but this allows for more experimentation when choosing courses and far less boredom. With more than 100 majors to choose from, the campus is bustling with students of all ideologies, races, and academic interests, making rousing discussions an everyday experience.

One of the nation's few top-notch universities that isn't private, UCLA is a place for those who want to learn more than a textbook contains. There’s pressure to shine socially and academically among the approximately 25,000 high-achieving Bruin undergrads, but there are plenty of campus organizations that give students a go-to friend group in the midst of the giant student body. However, it's up to the students to scout out and take advantage of all opportunities because nothing is handed to UCLA students—they must learn to navigate around red tape, persist through budget cuts, find parking and housing in Westwood's winding streets, and steer toward success. And how do they celebrate their successes? Parties! Whether through the semi-dominant Greek system or at a laid-back dorm gathering, UCLA students know how to put the books aside for a night. Overall, Bruins play nearly as hard as they work, making UCLA one of the most well-rounded schools imaginable.
