Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

UALR doesn’t have a football team, so the next best thing is basketball, and it is definitely the biggest sport at the University. When the season starts, fliers and posters promoting the team and upcoming games can be found all around campus. Home games gain a lot of attention, and even when the team has an out-of-town game, students will get together to watch the game on TV and cheer on the team. Derek Fisher, a former UALR player who is now on the Los Angeles Lakers, is arguably the University’s most famous alum and part of the reason why the school's basketball team gets a lot of hype. Combine that with the level of talent and skill on the team each yet, and the students love cheering on the players to victory. The women’s basketball team often has special events. For example, in October, the girls sometimes wear pink uniforms to support breast cancer awareness.

Of course, there are other sports here, such as baseball, track, and swimming, and the intramural sports are quite eventful, as well. Overall, the students here take great pride in the school's athletic functions, and because students get in free to games, there is usually a big turnout.

Most Popular Sports
Basketball, by far-the season seems to be the most exciting time of the scholastic year. With all the students cheering and clapping together, the Jack Stephens Center gets pretty intense, and the games are lots of fun. Some students use the games as a way to treat themselves after a long day's work, and others go to meet new people. But, overall, the basketball games become a great place to exercise school spirit.
Most Overlooked Teams
One of the most overlooked teams here is cross country. Usually seen running across campus, the cross country team is very dedicated. The swim team is also overlooked. But even though the cross country and swim teams aren't high profile, the athletes are dedicated and successful.
School Spirit
It's hard to find a student who doesn't own some sort of UALR apparel. The Barnes & Noble bookstore on campus sells everything from shirts and shorts to umbrellas and rain boots with the University logo. UALR's school spirit doesn't just spike during athletic events-it's constant throughout the school year.
Getting Tickets
Being a UALR student has its perks, one being that any student who presents his or her student ID card at the ticket booth gets in free.
Best Place to Take a Walk
The Trojan Trail is a scenic route around campus. The trail is marked well and begins at the Donaghey Center but can be accessed at any point of the trail. The trail has seen many feet a day, from parents to athletes to students looking to take nice walk.
