5 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: I love Albany! It's a nice place, especially in college town. I love it in Albany. It's easy to get around, there are all kinds of things fairly close and it's just beautiful. Everything is just lovely!

3 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: Everything is pretty much in walking distance. There's a lot of family owned restaurants, and a dinosaur BBQ right down the road. If you want to shop in town there are a couple cute, little (but a little pricey) boutiques. The bad thing is that you can end up in a bad part of town quite easily. The school constantly tells their students to never venture off campus alone, and they encourage the students to have pepper spray.

4 College Junior

Local Atmosphere: Troy is such a great place to live with tons of fun activities. There are so many places to eat and a lot of historic attractions. Of course, the city setting can be dangerous, however I've never run into any problems.

1 College Senior

Local Atmosphere: In downtown Troy there are nice shops, food chains, and beautifully constructed buildings to visit. However, the dingy and dull atmosphere of downtown Troy is overcome with locals who walk through the Sage campus. It is nice, however, to have RPI students to interact with just up the hill.

4 College Senior

Local Atmosphere: The community, the people, law enforcement and crossing guards help the ease of communting to the campus. I have not been involved or seen a major traffic jam or accident due to the high volume of commuters to college and even high schhol.

Troy is accommodating to students, many of which find jobs, internships, community service opportunities, and educational opportunities within a short distance from campus. The city also accommodates students in the sense that there is plenty to do, including shops, restaurants, libraries, and museums. There is a lot to keep students entertained and an example of one event is Troy Night Out, a monthly arts night in the downtown area. Students tend to stay on campus during prime hours of the school week because it is easier to complete homework and to participate in events on campus. The College holds events and activities on a regular basis, so there is always something for students to do on campus, as well.

Students tend to spend most of their free time off campus in the surrounding area of Troy, either at night or on weekends. Russell Sage is located only a short distance away from many colleges in the region, including SUNY Albany, Hudson Valley Community College, Siena College, Saint Rose, and the Sage College of Albany. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is the closest, only about two miles away. In the Troy area surrounding campus, it is not recommended to walk alone during the day or night. There have been safety issues off campus, mostly during the night, so students should always walk in groups and have emergency numbers programmed into their phones.
