5 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: I LOVE SYRACUSE, NEW YORK. It's a great little mix of everything you could ever want. It has great shopping (hello, Destiny USA!), FANTASTIC

3 College Senior

Local Atmosphere: The only attraction outside of the campus is the mall Destiny USA (which is actually great), and Armory Square if you want some nice food and some shopping. There aren't many activities outside of campus and people generally stay within the SU borders. There are also some very unsafe areas outside of campus, some not even too far away.

5 College Junior

Local Atmosphere: Most students going off campus either go to the mall or downtown to eat but the city has many other things to offer. Parks and after school programs that allow for volunteer work, restaurants, nightclubs, art displays and exhibits are all available to the students and are within easy transport to the campus.

Whenever discussing Syracuse, it is important to distinguish between the city of Syracuse and the University of Syracuse. Never is it more evident than in this section. SU is the castle on top of the Syracuse hill. Since Syracuse is a large university, most students find contentment in staying on campus because there is usually something going on. For those students that wish to venture off the campus, there are still options for them in the city of Syracuse and the surrounding areas.

There isn't much going on in the actual city of Syracuse; however, Carousel Mall is a popular hangout for SU students. The mall, most of the time, is far more populated by Syracuse high school kids. Then, there is Turning Stone Casino, a quick 30-minute drive from the campus, where students can legally gamble away what little money they have left. You can also bowl, barhop, or catch a movie, again at Carousel Mall. Your best option to get out of the routine for a weekend is to head to Montreal, only a four-hour trip. Also, SU is huge, so seeing a Lemoyne College or Onondaga Community College student on SU's campus is about as rare as a warm front.
