Greek life is present at SUNY New Paltz, but only for those who want it to be. Several fraternities and sororities have houses off campus, some of which regularly host keg parties. Everyone can partake in Greek life festivities, but it often seems like the majority of non-Greek-affiliated keg party attendants are underclassmen who want to drink but have no chance of getting into the bars. Consequently, beer runs out fast, so make sure to get there early if keg stands are your thing. One can always count on Greek parties for a well-balanced girl-to-guy ratio, with both sides looking their best.

The fraternities and sororities at New Paltz are notably diverse and open-minded. There are also specific organizations for students of various ethnic backgrounds, like Sigma Lambda Gamma, a Latina sorority. Recently, Delta Lambda Phi, a gay fraternity, has been pushing for official recognition from SUNY. If Greek life isn't your thing, not to worry: Most NP students are not involved in Greek life in any way and prefer to get their socialization on outside of Greek culture.
