4 College Senior

Facilities: Library hours and dining hours aren't great, but we have a beautiful gym, really good theatrical productions, and enough computer labs and study spaces to reasonably get by.

4 College Junior

Facilities: I commute so I haven't spent that much time doing things on campus. But there are plenty of places to do homework or hang out, there are always games, lectures, activities, or special guest on campus.

4 College Junior

Facilities: The campus is beautiful. They have recycling everywhere (go green!). The athletics facilities are large and accessible to athletes and non-athletes alike. Some of the buildings are beautiful. The one I spend most of my time in is not, but it's soon to be remodeled. The campus is diverse and the opportunities for different groups and clubs are incredible. There are always events going on around campus too for students to attend. Most are free.

4 College Junior

Facilities: We have over 150 clubs on campus so you are bound to find a club that interests you. If by chance you do not find a club that fits you, you can create your own club!

4 College Junior

Facilities: Our campus tries to get everyone involved. Because we are more of a liberal arts school, we do not take sports very seriously. And due to that our campus does other things to show school spirit like concerts and other fun campus events. We are a small school but we have a lot of school pride and spirit. We won the mascot madness competition last year, beating out all the other SUNY Schools.

One might say that the SUNY New Paltz campus is characterized by its lack of aesthetic harmony. Some NP buildings are Soviet-looking blocks of concrete, vaguely reminiscent of correctional facilities, while others are open, light-filled, and modern. There are also several old campus buildings, like prototypical collegiate edifices Old Main and Old Library, which frame the quad. The Sojourner Truth Library is a bit outdated, architecturally speaking, but it certainly delivers the goods when it comes to students' research. In addition to the thousands of books the library has on its shelves, it works with other New York State public libraries, so you can always get the book you are looking for, even if it comes from Buffalo or New York City.

There are two recently constructed facilities that greatly enhance New Paltz student life: the Athletic & Wellness Center, and the Student Union Building (SUB). The Athletic & Wellness Center, which opened in 2006 as an addition to the Elting Gym, boasts top-of-the-line workout equipment and an upper-level indoor track with panoramic views. There are also several basketball/volleyball courts and a pool, though they're usually taken over by intramural players and the swim team, respectively. The new atrium of the SUB is a glass pyramid that cost the school $13.4 million to build. Inside, there are touch-screen computers, couches, tables, and several food vendors—students rave about Tokyo Sushi on the second floor! The SUB is also home to the campus bookstore, the New Paltz Oracle (the student newspaper), the Edge (the radio station), frequent poetry slams, and programs like Billiards Night. Those of you who create and perform will be glad to hear that there are two theaters, two art buildings, and a renowned art gallery on campus.

"Green" Initiatives
SUNY New Paltz maintains its pledge to respect the environment through several "green" initiatives, like the introduction of solar-powered study rooms. The University has also allocated a significant portion of funds to supplying the campus with organic and local food options. In the spring, a small farmers' market is held every Thursday in front of the Lecture Center-weather permitting.

  • Dorm Competition: In the beginning of the year, everyone has an opportunity to buy a T-shirt that represents their residence hall. Then, they wear these shirts during the dorm competition games that the residents play. Food is provided, as well as music. It is a great way to meet other people and have a good time.
  • Dorm recycling competition: Dorms compete to see who can recycle the most-winners get cool prizes!
  • Unity in Diversity Day: This event celebrates the differences among people through food, spoken word, poetry, artistic endeavors, and theatrical performances.
Urban Legends
  • "The Boo Girl" lived in the basement of Bliss Hall in room number B 00. She committed suicide and still haunts the room!
  • Fresh Dance had a performance where a forbidden phrase from Macbeth was mentioned backstage. Then, there were plenty of injuries throughout the night.
Favorite Things To Do
There's karaoke on Friday nights, where free T-shirts are given out. There are also fashion shows throughout the school year. Various student organizations put on events and educational programs, stress relievers, and more.
