3 College Sophomore

Online Courses: Has a massive learning curve but it is alright once you get around to it.

4 College Senior

Online Courses: The online courses are great when it comes to time management. You are able to do the work when you have the time to do it. In some cases that is late at night when there aren't classroom times available. There are discussion boards to keep you interacting with your peers and professors and times where the professor is available to meet with you one on one if you are struggling.

4 College Junior

Online Courses: It was a fun class. It is a little difficult to interact with all the students because of the different times that everyone posts and responds.

3 College Senior

Online Courses: I have only taken one class online. I was having trouble getting access to a few things he was requiring for the class online, and he seemed quite condescending about helping me. He was not helpful whatsoever, and his directions did not follow what I really should've done to find the correct page. Therefore, I spent the first week of assignments trying to find it! For classes that you really need to know the information, I would recommend for any school taking the class in a classroom setting rather than online. That might be just for me because I am a listening kind of learner, but doing things online can allow people to look everything up and not learn very much. But like I said, this can be applied to just about every online course.

3 College Sophomore

Online Courses: I was not a huge fan of online courses, only because I like to listen to the professor talk and demonstrate the material.

CCC offers a number of Internet courses, especially during the summer semester. Many professors will also allow you to take an Internet-based independent study if you have a substantial reason.

Hybrid courses are also available; these are courses that are part lecture/part completed online. Benefits? Less time spent in a lecture, and this opens your schedule to take more fun electives! Hybrid courses are especially common—watch out, though! Be sure to double-check and ask your adviser which classes are hybrid courses. Many students do not know until the first day of the class, and if they did not want a hybrid class, it is more difficult to find an open course once the semester has started.

Facts & Statistics

Biggest Surprises
  • The courses are surprisingly low-stress. Being able to do the work when you have the time and whenever you choose to is a definite plus to online courses.
  • Quizzes and tests are timed; the time is reasonable, but it is stressful at first.
  • Sometimes the website is down or being worked on, which can cause problems.
  • You do need to tweak your computer/Internet browser settings to allow the courses to work best.
Required Tech Skills
Basic knowledge of a computer and how to use the Internet is required. There is a tech help center on campus to answer any questions, and you can also call this center if you are working outside of the school.
Typical Online Lecture - Single Day
You will be required to view PowerPoints, read chapters from texts, and possibly do assignments/minor quizzes each day.
Typical Online Course - Start to Finish
Courses require a quiz at least once a week. Many also require weekly assignments, projects, or participation in an online class discussion. Tests occur every two to three weeks. The final exam will occur at the end of the class, at about the same time as normal lecture classes will also be ending.
Online Testing & Grading
Most courses use quizzes and tests for grading. Some professors require weekly assignments or essays to make sure you understand the material you are learning. Grading is generally quick; the professors keep track of the students and their progress.
Did You Know?
Online courses are provided through the Blackboard environment through the MyCCC homepage. Through the homepage, click on "Web Browser Test" to see if your browser options are compatible.
