Campus Strictness: Easy to get away with a lot. Sometimes crack down on rules

4 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: Binghamton is really good at allowing students to have their fun while also keeping campus safe and protecting students. Police officers are very nice as long as you don't make a scene or disrespect them. They know what you're doing, but if you aren't causing trouble they won't either. Academics are extremely tough here however, so take your studies seriously.

The police will not tolerate drugs or underage drinking on campus, so if you get caught, you will be in trouble—fined, sentenced to probation, kicked off campus, or worse. The key, as students often point out, is to not get caught. There are no serious crackdowns on drugs or alcohol and no random searches, so you have to do something fairly obvious to get caught.

Get to know your RA; some are lenient and will let drinking in the dorms slide, some are much more strict and play everything by the book. If the RA finds something suspicious, he or she will usually tell the resident director (RD), who then goes to the police. The RA or RD will likely just issue a warning if they catch something illegal, but if they call the police, you could end up in a lot of trouble. Be smart, and if you want to really go nuts, go off campus.

Facts & Statistics

Students Are Most Likely to Get Caught...
  • Breaking traffic laws
  • Parking illegally
  • Possessing drugs

Visitation Policies
Non-student visitors or students from another school are usually welcome to stay on campus without any problem. But when visiting other students in dorms and residence halls, they must be there in order for you to gain entrance. All residence buildings remain locked at all times without the use of a specifically designated access card.
