Campus Strictness: they need more rules and enforcement with drinking

Campus Strictness: Overall the campus is very relaxed. They understand that as a tech school most of the students have high workloads and are under a lot of pressure. The relaxed strictness helps students to let off steam without adding the fear of getting into a lot of trouble.

Campus Strictness: Very lenient. Rules are not very restrictive, so the ones that are enforced are very important. Honor code is highly valued, and strictly punished. Alcohol policies, on the other hand, are very lenient and not very enforced, except during NSO and Admit Weekend. Essentially, the university trusts it's students, and so when it asks specific things of it's students, it is very clear on what should happen and demands respect for the few hard and fast rules.

In recent years, Stanford has grown stricter with alcohol consequences and punishments; however, for the most part, the school is pretty laid-back when it comes to these matters. The RAs and residential fellows (Stanford faculty and staff that live next to the dormitories) are aware of alcohol usage in the dorms. As long as you don't drink in common areas inside the dorms and keep your room door closed when drinking, you will be fine. The Stanford Police generally do not stop you on the street if you have cups in your hand. However, do not get caught drunk on your bike; the Stanford Police are known to give tickets if students seem intoxicated while biking.

Stanford holds its honor code to the highest standard. If you are accused of breaking the honor code in any way, you will meet with the Office of Judicial Affairs to decide whether you are guilty, as well as what the consequences will be if you are. In general, Stanford is very laid-back about rules and regulations, except for the honor code. Breaking the honor code is very serious and can lead to leaving the University.

Facts & Statistics

Students Are Most Likely to Get Caught...
  • Biking drunk
  • Biking with an unregistered bike
  • Biking without a headlight
  • Breaking the honor code
  • Parking illegally
Visitation Policies
Stanford encourages visitors, and there is no official policy for their length of stay. Invite your family members and friends to come and see your college life. You are granted five guest meals per quarter for the dining halls, too. Make sure you also tell your roommate in advance if someone is coming to visit and staying in your room; you don't want to surprise them with that news.
Did You Know?
Stanford is a very relaxed environment, but you need to remember that the rest of the world is not. Sometimes students leave campus and forget that certain rules (i.e., alcohol rules) apply in the real world. Be careful!
