4 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: The local atmosphere is average. A lot of cool scenery and good weather!

3 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: I love my hometown, so of course nothing can compare.

1 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: Spelman College is located in the worst neighborhood. The people who live in the West End are VERY unfriendly (and to be honest, a little scary). Atlanta requires a car to get around so if you don't you're kind of out of luck. The "mall" by the college is an embarrassment. If you safely make it into downtown Atlanta and all the surrounding cities, there are a million and one things to do.

3 College Senior

Local Atmosphere: The school is located in what looks like the hood. It is very ghetto looking. Althought there are a lot of fast food resturants around, there also are groceries stores nearby that the students can accessid they need to but food.

3 College Junior

Local Atmosphere: I don't go out much; so it's not really bothersome that the city isn't more like D.C. or New York. Things close really early in Atlanta. They do have thrift shops in the city which are cute but they are really expensive. They have only two good malls buts they're very far away if you take the MARTA. There isn't much to do in general. Concerts are fun though.

Atlanta, lovingly known as HotLanta, is one of the fastest growing cities in the South. Attending Spelman College provides an opportunity to experience the small community setting nestled within the gates, as well a chance to venture out and explore all that Atlanta has to offer. Spelman is just a short walk from MARTA, Atlanta's public transportation system. Hop on, and you will find some shopping malls and restaurants, but you will notice relatively quickly that, in this sprawling city, you really can't get around without a car. Atlanta plays host to many conferences and festival events. The National Black Arts Festival, Music Midtown, and most recently the VIBE Music Festival are three of the events that help make Atlanta a cultural hub. With more movies being shot in the city, celebrity sightings are picking up. History is big in Atlanta, and you will see historical markers throughout the city commemorating everything form the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement. You'll find the people in Atlanta to be friendly and inviting. Nothing beats Southern hospitality, and there is enough to go around in this town. Many people agree that "no one in Atlanta is from Atlanta." While Atlanta attracts many bright students, entrepreneurs and families, it also, like any large city, has a criminal element. Be careful, and watch out for con artists. When buying from street vendors in the city, a bargain may be easy to find, but the name brand on the bag may be covering up a fake.
