Career Services: Southwestern Michigan College strives extremely to help students prepare for their post-graduate careers. We have an amazing Student Service Career Center, the best part about it is that as soon as you walk in some one is there to help you. They make exploring your options easy, instead of intimidating. SMC connects you with everyone they possibly can whether are Alumni or not. I have been able to network with people I would have never even imagined. SMC is all about preparing you for life after college. I believe that after I leave SMC I will have full knowledge about what jobs are growing and what jobs are declining. Having that knowledge we be able to help me make better choices for future employment. Overall, Southwestern Michigan College does an excellent job of providing post-grad services.

Overall Experience: I greatly appreciate all of the help that is always available. I feel this is what makes SMC unique. The teachers, the office staff, everyone is willing to help! The classes include quality education. I am confident that I am learning a lot in each subject matter. The teachers really make an effort to take difficult concepts and make them understandable. I am not sure I would have gained the understanding that I have while attending a different school. At SMC, I know that I can trust my teachers to guide me through the material. For example, there was one chapter in Physiology that just simply had my head spinning after I had read through it. It was totally foreign to me. I was very worried about it and as I came into the next class, I even mentioned to my professor that I have confidence that he is about to make it all "make sense." He smiled, encouraged me and class began. Sure enough, he took what made no sense at all to me, and transformed it into easy to understand material. I left that class fully understanding the chapter!

Academic Flexibility: They have made taking night classes an easy process. By offering classes at both their Niles and Dowagiac campuses, I am able to take classes closer to home. So far, all of the classes I have needed were offered in the evening. There was one incidence where a co-requisite was only offered during the day. I went in to speak to my adviser and explained that due to work, I could not attend day classes. Right away, she set about to make special arrangements for me and I was able to get right back to pursuing my degree. I am very pleased with every aspect of this school!

Tuition & Financial Aid: You certainly get your money's worth here! The expenses are very reasonable in comparison with other local schools. There are no hidden fees or surprises. There is always a great education in store for each class I have taken. Financial Aid has been very helpful as well. They are quick to answer all of my questions and are very clear as to what steps need to be taken to apply. They offer scholarships as well which are easy to apply for.

Career Services: As always, SMC has been eager to help me with everything. They are very kind and willing to take extra steps to communicate with my transfer school. Even when I felt my transfer school wasn't being very helpful, the SMC staff was right there to help me. I only wish that they offered the degree I am pursuing. I deeply regret that my degree will not be from SMC. I have a lot of school spirit and pride for this college!

Student Body: I have a limited perspective, as I only attend night classes. Over-all, I would say in my exposure that everyone has seemed willing to participate in class and all are working towards a career goal. Ages in my classes can range from students still attending High school to adults well into their 50's. Class rooms have a very comfortable environment. My observations are that the student body has a decent ethnic diversity.

Academic Experience: I am currently Majoring in Medical Pre-professional. The classes contain a lot of material to learn, but in each class, my teacher has guided me through step by step. It is amazing how much I have learned in a single semester! There is a lot of emphasis on relating what we are learning to its importance in our profession. You have to take time and do your homework and studying if you want to do well in these classes. i see some students who seem to expect to stop into class occasionally and expect an A. That doesn't work in Science. Plan to attend class and put in study time outside of class so that you can learn the material well. However, with a bit of effort on your part, you will easily get that A as well as gain so much knowledge! It is definitely worth putting in the effort!

Academic Experience: Classes are small and the Professors seem to really care about your quality of education. Registration for classes is very easy, and free tutoring is also available. The student work load seems reasonable and is dependent on the size of the class. The more credit hours, expect more time outside of class as well. This school offers a nice variety of majors, and my research shows that their credits transfer to many local schools. I just wish they offered a Dental Hygienist program, so that I could graduate from this school. My biggest disappointment is that they do not offer a degree for the program of which I am pursuing. However, they are capable of helping me obtain all of my prerequisite classes for the program and I am confident that I am gaining a better education taking these classes at SMC as opposed to going through my transfer school.

Facilities: The best thing about this school is that the staff is so very helpful. I looked into several local colleges and all of the other schools I spoke with were very difficult to get any real information about what they could offer me. They all wanted me to apply for their school before making even the slightest attempt to show me why I should even be interested in attending their school. It was very frustrating. SMC on the other hand, sat down and took their time with me and explained everything. They answered all of my questions and guided me through the whole process. Unfortunately, they do not offer a Dental Hygienist degree, so I will eventually have to transfer, but I am taking as many classes as I can at SMC before I have to deal with a difficult school. I have attended SMC for 2 years at half time, taking classes in the evenings, and it has been a wonderful experience the whole way!
