College Sophomore

Online Courses: I have not registered for any online classes yet.

3 College Senior

Online Courses: I only had one online class at Southern Union. It was a great experience. I absolutely loved the teacher I had. It was different from a regular classroom experience because the teacher did not get in front of the class and teach. It was all online work, but she was still available to help if needed.

2 College Freshman

Online Courses: Professors don't seem to care.

2 College Junior

Online Courses: Out of the 4 online courses I've taken, only one professor seemed to have any communication skills whatsoever. When it comes to teaching their online courses, my other professors seem not to take the job as seriously as traditional courses. Two of my professors communicated only minimally throughout the semester and only when contacted first, and the remaining professor went missing for two months, issuing no grades and no communications in the interim. The school was unhelpful in even locating my professor, who then reappeared and hastily graded the remaining coursework, refusing to grade some assignments because "she was ready to be finished with the semester". The technology failed or stalled on a consistent basis, costing me a score of 24 on a History exam, and dropping my grade from an A to a B, where it remained on my transcript because my professor refused me a makeup exam. The Respondus browser disabled certain functions on my computer to which I still do not have access, as it has taken my privileges as administrator since an emergency shutdown. Tech support at the school told me to contact Respondus tech support, who were wholly unhelpful and insisted the problem was with my hardware, though Ohio State students have reported the same problem. The software functions more like malware than a browser. In sum, the online course experience at Southern Union was what the kids today call an "epic fail".

5 College Junior

Online Courses: I have had no problems taking online courses at my school! I have taken three classes online and every time was a pleasant experience! If I had problems, I knew I could email my instructor and receive the help I deserve in a timely manner.

Southern Union offers several subjects for online courses, ranging from 098 courses to more advanced classes. To find lists of offered online courses, you can call Student Services or read "The Southerner" (the Southern Union campus newspaper) at the beginning of each semester. Online courses are completed by using the Blackboard system. At the beginning of each semester, especially for students new to Blackboard, each class is offered a tutorial on how to use the system. This includes where to find your grades and assignments, as well as testing and quizzes.

You must be knowledgeable of the Internet and how to use a flash drive to transfer any work. If the students should need help with the Blackboard program, the professors are on hand to assist. Professors at Southern Union are always willing to help students; all you have to do is ask them.

Facts & Statistics

Required Tech Skills
When attending an online course, you will need access to the Internet and have at least one thumb drive (flash drive). You will need to know how to use the flash drive if you are not working at school so that you do not lose your work before you submit it.
Southern Union's online courses are accessed through Blackboard, and the professors are on hand to help you learn all the tricks and shortcuts.
Typical Online Lecture - Single Day
Typically, a lecture day in an online class includes your professor giving the normal lecture in the front of the classroom with the students taking notes as needed. Online class lectures are almost no different from normal class lectures, except that it's all through the computer.
Typical Online Course - Start to Finish
A typical online course begins with the usual "getting to know you" stuff, as you learn more about your professor and fellow students, and then it progresses to assignments and exams through Blackboard. And if the students need it, some professors will help tutor those needing to learn how to use their flash drives. Interaction is completed through discussion boards.
Online Testing & Grading
All tests and quizzes for online courses are found through Blackboard, in a section separate from the rest of your coursework. Your professors will explain further when tests are posted.
