5 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: Something about being in Carbondale feels like home. Living here gives me a sense of security.

5 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: Honestly, there is no other place I rather be.

4 College Sophomore

Facilities: Besides the horrible food options, the school presents an impeccable amount of opportunity for each individual and really do strive on the success of others. The university really do try to help everyone leave more knowledgeable and successful. Most staff really do focus on pushing students to their limit so they can be better rather than not caring and sliding issues under the rug.

5 College Sophomore

Facilities: There are specific things for each individual to partake in and if not one can easily begin a group or club for it. The easy access to these activities is what makes it the best.

4 College Sophomore

Greek Life: I like the idea of brotherhood and sisterhood and the campus really acknowledge these ideas in a positive light through recognition and opportunity.

Off-Campus Dining: There is only one place I like off campus (New Khala), but it's not convenient nor reasonably priced. Other than that everywhere else does not have good quality food. Like greasy Sam's Cafe.

Off-Campus Housing: There's a lot of off-campus housing, but the least expensive are not in the safest parts of town. The proximity to campus is great and the transit system runs through many of the locations.

4 College Junior

Local Atmosphere: There are several shopping centers in town and the transit system allows the students to go around town without having to walk.

Scholarships: During my senior year of high school, I applied for the full-ride scholarship and the only other academic scholarship on campus. After I received my financial aid letter, I found that it was filled almost entirely with government aid and loans. I tried calling the financial aid department on several occasions, but they would not discuss the matter with me or explain why I had not received any further aid. My parents tried to intervene on my behalf and the department would not discuss it with them either. In the end, a highly esteemed professor within my department went to the head of financial aid to get some answers and later told me that the department waited to put my academic and financial information into the computer until the deadline had already passed, even though they had had it in their possession for over a month. I also found out that they had lost my application for the scholarships, but agreed to give me the smaller scholarship which would only cover part of the cost and last for two years.

I am now entering my third year at the university and have contacted the financial aid department about providing more aid since the scholarship ran out. There aren't any university funded academic scholarships for continuing students with a high GPA and even though I have a 4.0, I can't get the aid to stay in school. The department continues to offer me a high amount of loans for which I am eligible, but I do not want to come away from school with an overwhelming amount of debt.

My advice is that anyone applying for aid at this school should continually keep tabs on the department. Contact them constantly and make them work for you.

Facilities: The music department is great! The professors are brilliant and are committed to helping the students do well as long as the student puts forth an effort. There are several large ensembles which hold concerts throughout the year and they are open to all students by audition. The school also hosts a spring festival called "Outside the Box" featuring newly composed music. During the summer, many of the students, faculty and community members take part in the music festival.

3 College Junior

Facilities: I would have to say that social opportunities on campus is fairly limited. Apart from the bowling and billiards, there isn't much to do without leaving campus. The most common social hangouts on campus are at the library coffee commons or at the Starbucks in the student center.

4 College Junior

Guys & Girls: There is a lot of diversity among the student population.

4 College Senior

Off-Campus Dining: There are many good restaurants off campus. Mexican restaurants are extremely popular and really cheap. Everyone loves it. They are as good as they are going to get when compared to Chicago Mexican food. It is pretty off campus so it might be difficult to get to, but it is definitely worth the commute.

Majors: If I could do it all over again, I definitely would. Being a transfer student, I wasn't really prepared with the academic challenges. I needed to learn how to manage my time. I feel that I could do so much better if I started off with the right mindset. Because my grades are not where they should be for my program and I don't have experience, I feel that I will struggle finding a job after graduation.

4 College Senior

Majors: Depending on how involved a student is in school, a student has so many opportunities to get an internship. I personally have not yet obtained or even looked for an internship through the school; however, I do know of many friends who have had wonderful experiences with their internships that they have had with the help of UIUC.

4 College Senior

Diversity: This campus is extremely diverse and accepting of different cultures. I transferred in from SIUC to UIUC and felt so much more comfortable being a Latina at UIUC than at SIUC. I found my own home within the school and felt accepted anywhere I was involved in.

3 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: It's a small college town. Things to do around campus but other than that, there's not much.

4 College Sophomore

Scholarships: Financial aid was an absolute breeze.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: I haven't looked into the off-campus housing but I've heard that its a mixed bag.

3 College Sophomore

Athletics: I have a good impression of the athletics. Being an athlete, I am impressed by how nice and new the facilities are.

3 College Sophomore

Greek Life: I honestly don't know much about the Greek life other than the fact that they throw parties.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: There are some places to dine. Just don't expect to be blown away.

4 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: Campus is safe from my point of view. I haven't had any problems.

2 College Sophomore

Campus Dining: The food is shady at best. Especially the Mexican cuisine options

2 College Sophomore

Weather: Monsoon season in the Spring... if it's not icing, there is a tornado or it's wicked hot.
