Facts & Statistics

Tips for Getting In
  • Apply early.
  • Focus on what makes you unique. The Smith admissions staff isn't looking for someone ordinary. But still be yourself and don't overdo it-no one likes a show-off.
  • Get good letters of recommendation.
  • In addition to having high grades, it is important to be in leadership positions, whether it's through extracurriculars, sports, travel, volunteering, or work.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities, especially political or community service.
  • Show a true interest in Smith-talk about the academic program you want to get involved in or opportunities you're interested in, like the Praxis internship, the Five Colleges consortium, or study abroad.
  • Take AP classes. Don't overload yourself, but take at least two if you have the opportunity.
  • Talk about why you want to attend a women's college.
  • Write about something you're passionate about in your essay. Bonus points if you're passionate about something that betters the world.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Buying your computer through the school ensures that you will have free access to technical assistance all four years.
  • Do a pre-orientation program.
  • Girls drink a lot!
  • It's harder to take classes off campus than it seems.
  • The house you're in really shapes your experience.
  • The winters here are frigid.
  • There is a lot of work outside of classes, which is a hard adjustment coming from high school, where most of the work takes place in the classroom.
Interviews & Information Sessions
Information sessions are conducted by admission counselors and are offered throughout the year, except from February 1 to April 1, when they are only available for transfer students.

Interviews are highly recommended. Prospective students should schedule an interview between April 1 of their junior year and January 31 of their senior year.

To schedule a group information session or interview, contact the Office of Admission at (413) 585-2500.
Campus Tours
Tour are given Monday through Friday at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m., and Saturdays (July 11-Aug. 29, Sept. 12-Jan. 23) at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. Tours last about an hour and can be scheduled through the Admissions website.
Overnight Visits
High school seniors and transfer students can arrange to stay overnight during the week (excluding Friday night) when college is in session from late September to mid-November and February and March. Call the Office of Admission at (413) 585-2500 at least three to four weeks in advance.

Did You Know?
The entire campus is a botanic garden and was horticulturally designed to look beautiful in both the winter and spring, so visitors will see a beautiful campus regardless of the time of year.
