Though Santa Clara has plenty of computers available for student use, they're a hot commodity during midterms and finals week, so students often find it handy to have their own laptop. On the other hand, many students find it unnecessary to own a printer, as it's just as easy to use the printers in the library or dorms. Students are automatically granted $50 in printing money each year, but that money goes fast, and many students have to add money to their account after winter quarter. While campus printers are a great resource, they can be problematic during high-volume times, when they start to jam up or run out of ink right before classes start.
The campus network is fairly reliable, but tends to go down at the most inconvenient time (like during midterms or finals week.) Luckily, it's often fixed pretty quickly. It helps to have an ethernet cable for when the wireless goes out, as there are plenty of ethernet jacks in both the dorms and library.
