4 College Sophomore

Facilities: Student life is great! Living on campus really helps with getting to know people, and the food court and caf are outstanding.

5 College Sophomore

Facilities: The campus is beautiful and not very modern. I live that! It is voted the most beautiful campus in Alabama.

4 College Sophomore

Facilities: Facilities are all fairly new. The athletic centers should increase its variety of machines and activities available.

2 College Sophomore

Facilities: The social scene is horrendous. Samford is known as being a bubble campus and this is very true. Most of the kids come from the same background and have the same interest. If you do not share these same interests then you feel left out.

Samford provides several fun places for students to relax. O'Henry's Coffeehouse and Harry's, which are right beside each other in the University Center, are especially popular places for friends to hang out and do homework. The library is nice and quiet, with plenty of tables and study carrels, enabling students to study with friends or in private. The science center is especially impressive because it features a planetarium and a conservatory. It is possibly one of the cleanest and nicest buildings on campus.

In terms of athletics, the Pete Hanna Center, where volleyball and basketball games are played, has a very nice workout facility for students and faculty. The ellipticals and treadmills have little televisions attached to them, so students have something to do while strengthening their muscles. There are several other machines from which to choose, and there is also a weight room. In Seibert Gym and Bashinsky Field House, which are connected, there are racquetball courts, an indoor pool, a dance studio, and gyms open to athletes and non-athletes alike. The nursing building is a close second, though. Samford also has very nice tennis courts which are open to students in the mornings, early afternoon, and evenings. The tennis team practices from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays. Thankfully, for night owls, lights come on when it gets too dark to see the ball.

Bar on Campus
Samford is a dry campus, but there are several bars scattered throughout Birmingham that aren't far from Samford.
Bowling on Campus
Sadly, there's no bowling alley on campus. However, Vestavia Bowl is only about 15 minutes away, and Residence Life has rented it out before so Samford students could bowl for free.
Coffeehouse on Campus
O'Henry's Coffeehouse is a fun hangout for friends, situated on the first floor of the University Center.
Movie Theater on Campus
There's no official theater on campus, but sometimes movies are played for convo credit or language clubs in the planetarium, which is nice and dark. Also, Vail Hall has a movie room with comfortable, gigantic bean bags, a big screen TV, and surround sound, so people love to rent it out for movie nights with friends. In "The Underground" in Beeson Woods, there's a nice TV with a DVD player, as well.
"Green" Initiatives
Recycle bins can be found all over campus, especially outside in the dorms. Also, there is a hard-working club called Restoring Eden that students can join in order to help Samford stay green.
School Slang
  • The Caf: Samford's one and only cafeteria
  • Convo: Events offering convocation credits that students must collect in order to graduate
  • The Hub: Formerly called "the Fish Bowl," it's the information center located inside the University Center
  • The Pit: J.D. Pittman Hall

  • The Underground: Hangout area connected to Rosa Hall, which contains a ping-pong table, pool table, piano, couches, bathroom, and television
Lighting of the Way: During the Christmas season, students gather on the Quad to light candles along the sidewalks and sing Christmas carols. Then, President Westmoreland reads a beloved children's book, and the enormous Christmas tree lights up for the first time that year.
Urban Legends
Supposedly, a hobo lives in Vail Hall attic.

Clubs and Organizations on Campus
It is extremely easy to get involved in an organization on campus. At the beginning of each semester, representatives of each club set up boards with information about what they do. Some popular organizations include Army ROTC, language clubs, SGA (Student Government Association), Helping Hands (sign language), and Active Minds. Active Minds is a depression-awareness group especially active during exam week, providing balloons, massages, and other stress-relievers to calm students' nerves.
