4 College Sophomore

Diversity: Though Samford is a southern Christian University, it has a wide variety of students including a large international student population. With this being so, the beliefs and values of the students do vary from person to person.

4 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Samford has a variety of types of students who attend. We have from very conservative to the opposite. Anyone willing to be him or herself would be welcomed.

College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: I have not experienced living off campus. I among 60% of the student population will live on campus all four years. There are many places close by to campus to live off campus, and with off campus living does provide freedom, which many students enjoy.

5 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: Samford University is a dry campus. The drug and alcohol scene is not really a scene. If you try to find drugs and alcohol, you can find it, but as a whole Samford does not have a drug or alcohol scene.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: Samford University has a values system, and has specific rules to be followed. They are strict, but very manageable. These rules are simply a stipulation of attending Samford.

College Sophomore

Transportation: Samford University has a very small campus. It takes at maximum 15 minutes to walk from one end of campus to the other. This being so, students are not in need of transportation options on such a walkable campus.

4 College Sophomore

Facilities: Samford is the largest Christian University in Alabama. We have many graduate degrees and well established bachelors degrees. Samford also has an honors program that provides a great additional learning opportunity for students interested in a more challenging academic route. All classes are taught by professors, not graduate assistants. This being so the classes are very personal and the student to teacher ratio is very low.

Facilities: Samford has a beautiful campus, which well kept facilities. The buildings are architecturally magnificent as well as well build and useful. The campus is buzzing with people on a beautiful day, and the quad always has people out enjoying the green grass. Campus life is always a pleasant atmosphere.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Dining: The food is good, especially for being mass produced for a college. The chef is professionally trained and has cooked at high end restaurants.

4 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: Homewood is a very safe nice neighborhood. It is not far from Birmingham which provides a wide variety of attractions and activities. There are a lot of parks, shopping areas, and restaurants near to campus

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: My friends and I love exploring the city for new places to eat!

4 College Freshman

Parking: Since I don't have a car, I only experience the parking when driving with others. All in all, the parking is pretty great on campus.

3 College Freshman

Transportation: I always just catch rides with my friends or bike down to the closest shopping center.

5 College Freshman

Campus Housing: I love dorm living! While our building is older, the community makes up for it. The girls on my hall are great, our RA is amazing, and my roommate (who I was put with through roommate placement) is my best friend.

4 College Freshman

Drug Safety: I would really have to ask around to find drugs or alcohol. Neither are abundantly available.

4 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: My view is tainted because I do not own a car and therefore do not visit the city much. However, from what I've seen, the surrounding area is nice and offers many restaurant and entertainment choices.

3 College Freshman

Nightlife: I haven't been to too many parties. Most people study on the week nights, and if I was to hang out, I do so with close friends.

5 College Freshman

Scholarships: Because of my involvement in high school, I was awarded the highest scholarship that my school offers. I was also able to get a legacy scholarship for a distant relative.

5 College Freshman

Academics: I absolutely love my current major. I was able to take major-specific classes this past semester as an incoming freshman, which was awesome. The professors are brilliant and interested in me and my future plans.

4 College Freshman

Academics: My general education classes this first semester were pretty great, I enjoyed all of them. My professors were very smart, and the work was difficult but manageable.

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: I haven't experienced off campus housing yet, but I hear its nice and affordable.

2 College Freshman

Diversity: Since the school is Baptist affiliated, and right in the middle of the Bible Belt, I would say it is not overly accepting of persons with varying religious beliefs or sexual orientation. I don't think these people would be harassed, but they would definitely feel alienated because most students are Bible-believing Christians.

4 College Freshman

Campus Dining: I think our school has a higher end caf. The hours are not the best though.

5 College Freshman

Health & Safety: I have been twice, and was very impressed!

4 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: I like how strict the rules on campus are. We all signed agreements to follow the Honor Code before attending and therefore should not be upset that we are being held to that high standard.

Samford can be a wonderful experience for students. While the first semester can be extremely difficult, with students being away from their families and friends for the first time, things become easier with perseverance. Students first need to get out of their comfort zones and invest in the hilarious, wonderful people who make up the Samford population.

That being said, the people make the experience worthwhile, and there are always opportunities to meet new people, whether it's free concerts on the quad, chilling next to the fountain in Ben Brown Plaza, renting the Vail movie room for "Glee" nights, Step Sing, or worshiping at RUF (Reformed University Fellowship). These are just some of the many things students can experience at Samford. Plus, the caring professors instill in students not only knowledge, but wisdom, preparing men and women for the future every time they step into the classroom. The liberal arts aspect prompts many to draw endless comparisons and similarities between different classes, teaching students to see the "big picture." In addition, the various convo speakers shed new light on issues that matter, making students take on new points of view about things rarely given a second thought.
