Local Atmosphere: Birmingham Is Pretty Cool! Samford is right on the outskirts of Birmingham and there is always something to do in this city. Being raised in a small town, it was a big transition for me. At first it was a little stressful, but after a while I discovered that Birmingham is a really fun place to live if you know how to avoid rush hour.

Scholarships: It Was Alright – I mean I have nothing bad to say about the office of financial aid. They were very helpful in telling me what I had on my award letter and exactly giving me a little more scholarship money soci would be able to go to school.

Off-Campus Dining: The Caf – Its good to eat, but it does get repetitive, so the student has to get creative. Other than that the food is reall good.

Weather: Its very pretty at Samford Unversity, but being in alabama it gets hot and really humid. Other than that the weather is really great

Overall Experience: Every Experience is Unique – Even though Samford is a small university, it still offers a wide variety of things to be involved in, places to find you niche. And due to the small nature of the student body, you are not limited to one type of involvement (i.e. Greek Life, Athletics, campus ministries, etc.). You are free and able to do whatever interests you, being as involved or uninvolved as you would like.

Drug Safety: Drugs Are Uncommon – People are not really involved with drugs on campus. That most likely comes from Samford's strick drug and alcohol policy. Alcohol is more common on campus but also must be hidden since its a dry campus. If you get caught with drugs or alcohol there are pretty big repercussions.

Academics: We have a great business school with incredible teachers. The curriculum is challenging but serves to prepare for the real world. I work hard in my classes but I respect my teachers and understand why I am having to do the work assigned therefore it makes my major enjoyable.

Academics: The Teachers Care About Your Learning – The teachers are all really knowledgable and care about you as a person.

Transportation: Good, but Not Much Need on Campus – Because it's a small campus, there's not a huge need for transportation on campus; however, Campus Security is available to escort anyone to his/her dorm if he/she feels unsafe (for free), which is nice. As Samford is in Birmingham, there are many options for long-distance travel--e.g., train, bus, airplane, and of course car.

Weather: Usually Great, but Sometimes It's Weird – Being in Alabama, we have pretty mild weather. It doesn't snow a lot in the winter (but when it does, the campus is Christmas-card beautiful). It gets pretty hot here in the summer, but it's manageable. Weather around season changes can be incredibly variable--in the fall, one day it might be sunny and warm and the next day it rains and the temperature drops 20 or 30 degrees...it will stay like that for at least a few days, and then it'll usually warm up again.

Academics: Amazing Faculty, Challenging Curriculum – My first year at Samford was challenging academically. I really felt like I was learning the material and being well-prepared for future classes in my degree. The curriculum is interesting and provides students with a knowledgable background in literature, Western history, writing, fitness and health, and Biblical history. 80% of the faculty members at Samford have a terminal degree in their field. They are not only extremely knowledgable, but also extremely helpful! Every professor has weekly office hours and might even offer his/her phone number to students in case they need help at an odd time. The small class sizes (20-30 in most cases) ensures that no student falls through the cracks and class discussion greatly adds to a typical lecture. Samford has many nationally ranking academic programs, including law, business, nursing, and education.

Drug Safety: Policy Enforced – Samford is a Christian university with no toleration for alcohol or drugs. If a student is caught in either activity, a serious punishment is in store. Now, with that said, students still take the risk. There is definitely a drinking scene if you search for it. I have not heard anything about drug use, but students are allowed to smoke cigarettes on campus. Overall, I barely notice it, because I have found a large friend group that does not seek any of those activities. I have experienced absolutely no peer pressure when it comes to drinking or doing drugs. If you chose not to do these things, you will in no way be alienated by other students.

Greek Life: Like Nowhere Else – Growing up in a big college town, I would have never seen myself taking part in any sort of Greek Life. But Samford is like any other. The Greeks on campus support not only the members of their own organization, but all the other organizations on campus. Don't get me wrong, there is certainly a healthy rivalry, but my college experience would not be the same without being a part of Greek Life at Samford.

Local Atmosphere: Wonderful Locals – Birmingham is a beautiful city with every kind of attraction you can think of. There are clubs, museums, semi-professional baseball, multiple universities, an abundace of beautiful parks, a near-by theme park, festivals galore, and the best shopping in Alabama!

Off-Campus Dining: There are so many places to eat in and around Birmingham! My friends and I are always finidng new, fun places to try out!

Weather: The Enchanted Forest – The weather is usually very nice here. It rains every now and then, but usually there are clear skies and sunshine. Because of the beautiful weather, squirells and birds come out and run around campus. Samford's campus is in the middle of a forested area, so the weather and the location make a magical mood.

Drug Safety: Respect Eachother – Smoking is allowed at Samford University. However, smokers must be courteous to others and cannot smoke in classrooms or buildings. No other drug is really accepted.

3 College Junior

Parking: Not Enough – They need to provide more options for those who want to park.

Computers: There are is 17 computer labs throughout the school.

2 College Junior

Transportation: Apparently there is a Samford shuttle, although I've never seen it. There are no buses or other public transportation vehicles that come there. The parking situation is also infuriating if you are a commuter and don't live on campus.

2 College Junior

Greek Life: Major Division – There is a major division between Greeks and Independents mostly because of the economic situation of the students. The students on scholarships can't afford to be Greek, and those that are Greek flaunt their money. Occasionally, Greek and Indies have good mingling in campus areas like University Ministries, RUF, and Campus Outreach. Greeks also have a stereotypical "dress" that can be spotted from anywhere.

Off-Campus Dining: Check Out – Late Night: Purple Onion
Unique: Dreamland Barbecue, Nabeel's, Mugshots

4 College Freshman

Parking: Reasonable, but Room for Improvement – While the freshmen have their own parking garage directly behind their dorms, upperclassmen have a little more difficult time with parking availability. Permit costs are certainly reasonable and last a whole year. There are $50 parking violations, but these can be objected in the Student Senate. Many people do not a have a car on campus and do not seem to have an issue getting around.

4 College Freshman

Campus Dining: Be Creative! The food in the "caf," as we call it at Samford, is good ol' southern home cooking. There are six-seven different options offered every meal. Yes, they do repeat meals, but that should not be an issue if students try out the different options and try to find a balance. Sometimes, nothing looks good except the pizza, but that happens in relation to food in general. There is also a food court that offers Chick-fil-a and other delicious options if the caf is not appealing on a particular day.

Samford can be a wonderful experience for students. While the first semester can be extremely difficult, with students being away from their families and friends for the first time, things become easier with perseverance. Students first need to get out of their comfort zones and invest in the hilarious, wonderful people who make up the Samford population.

That being said, the people make the experience worthwhile, and there are always opportunities to meet new people, whether it's free concerts on the quad, chilling next to the fountain in Ben Brown Plaza, renting the Vail movie room for "Glee" nights, Step Sing, or worshiping at RUF (Reformed University Fellowship). These are just some of the many things students can experience at Samford. Plus, the caring professors instill in students not only knowledge, but wisdom, preparing men and women for the future every time they step into the classroom. The liberal arts aspect prompts many to draw endless comparisons and similarities between different classes, teaching students to see the "big picture." In addition, the various convo speakers shed new light on issues that matter, making students take on new points of view about things rarely given a second thought.
