Academics: I'm in the School of Nursing and the professors and everyone involved in this program are absolutely fantastic. They challenge me on a daily basis and truly are passionate about teaching and their love for nursing and helping others. I solely deal with the nursing department, and my workload is very intense, especially because I'm in an accelerated program. The school of nursing offers many internship opportunities and covers a wide variety of topics in our curriculum.

Computers: The computer labs are usually full, especially during the evening times. Often times there are classes that meet in the computer labs so you need to work around the class schedules because you are not allowed into the lab while a class is taking place. I find the only time I get frustrated with not being able to get on a computer is when I need to print something out from my laptop.

Weather: It does not snow a lot here which is great if you don't like cold weather. The cold weather will never be an excuse as to why you cannot make it to class. All 4 seasons are experienced here so in the spring, summer, and early fall, the campus is more active and doing more fun and enjoyable things outside. There are more people on the lawns and playing sports or relaxing in hammocks that it makes for a really nice campus environment.

Academics: Even though I was offered full-ride scholarships to other universities, I chose to attend Samford University despite limited financial assistance because the school has a reputation of excellence and is home to many world-renowned professors. This reputation has proved true. I have been challenged and enriched.

Local Atmosphere: Samford is just minutes away from downtown Birmingham where there are many activities, many restaurant choices, and a brand new baseball stadium was just built. It is also less than a mile from Brookwood Mall with great shopping options, and within driving distance of the Riverchase Galleria.

Athletics: Athletic programs at Samford are growing yearly...so is student/fan involvement in attending sporting events and being spirited. It was exciting going to football and basketball games in my freshman year. Intramurals are also a huge deal at Samford.

Transportation: I am not entirely aware of all of the transportation options that take place at my school. I am a local student that lives within 10 minutes of the school, so I do not require transportation services. My friends that live in other states have never spoken of any problems to me, though.

Off-Campus Dining: Samford University is located in a unique area. Homewood, Alabama is located less than a mile from Brookwood Mall, which is a great place to shop (it includes many popular stores and a brand new Target store), and it is surrounded by many restaurants that range in price from reasonable, Like Jason's Deli, to expensive restaurants like Brio and Cocina Superior. There are also many strip malls near Samford that contain restaurants popular with Samford students, such as Newk's and Nothing but Noodles. Conveniently, Samford is located within minutes of Mountain Brook, Hoover, and Dowtown Birmingham--all of these locations have dining options. The restaurant options near Samford are varied enough to never become repetitive.

Health & Safety: Since I live off campus, this is great. I came onto campus late one night. They close one of the gates at night. There is a campus safety officer out there to check if you have a Samford parking decal. If you don't, you cannot be on campus.
Even if I have to stay very late when I am studying, I feel safe walking on campus at night.

Academics: All of my professors have been great. I don't love the way the Spanish classes are set up online but Prof. Moore was my favorite teacher! If you can take her, do it! Also Dr. Bolden gives a lot of homework but it's not hard and she is so nice about late work. Talk to your advisor, but also look at your schedule and try to keep yourself on track if you want to graduate in 4. They mean well but not all the advisors give the best advice all the time.

Majors: It seems like there are a lot of majors and a lot of really good programs. I'm here for interior design which not a lot of schools have around here. I haven't heard bad things about any of the departments and Samford keeps adding new majors.

Campus Housing: The freshman dorms are ok, they just got new washers so that's nice. Upperclassmen have a bit farther to walk to their classes but it's not too bad. Some upperclassmen decide to stay in Pittman, which I really don't understand.

Nightlife: Its a conservative private university, so people aren't there for the "crazy night party life"

Campus Dining: Its rare for athletes to be able to eat what is served as the main courses for the meals, we usually have to stick with the salad bar and grilled chicken options

Drug Safety: Samford is a dry campus, but alcohol is very common (at least in the Greek community).

While most people will tell you there isn't much of a drug presence, I have to disagree. The majority of people I hang around do drugs, but this is just the group of people I am around. For the most part people [who do drugs] just smoke weed, but every once in awhile there's people who do acid, molly and coke. If drugs are your thing, you'll be most likely to find them around the frats... just not pi kapp.

Diversity: From what I've observed so far, in terms of race, religious beliefs, and political beliefs, Samford has a pretty well maintained balance. Everyone gives the impression of respecting the other.

3 College Sophomore

Athletics: The baseball, softball, and basketball teams are all great teams. The football team could use some work, but the athletes here are dedicated and work crazy hard to improve.

4 College Sophomore

Greek Life: The students involved in Greek life are also deeply involved in many other facets on campus, such as Student Government Associations, religious affiliated clubs, etc. The Greek life is also very interactive within the Greek community on campus. The fraternities and sororities frequently have mixers, and support one anothers fund raisers.

Health & Safety: Campus Safety can be very helpful, but also very pointless. They will help you jump-start your car, but spend too much time writing parking tickets instead of helping with actual needs.

Health services is also a waste of my tuition money. They do not help, and often are just a waste of precious time.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: Students are required to live on-campus until the age of 21. After that, your options are limited if you want to be close to campus, because campus is in a pretty high-priced neighborhood. There are places that are cheaper, but they are of low quality. This encourages students to live in the pricey on-campus upperclassmen housing.

Computers: Samford is a great place to be as far as computers go! We have many computer labs scattered throughout campus. The largest of these is in the University Library. The computers there are dual platform- meaning they can run as either a PC or a Mac. There is also free wifi all over campus, so you can use your laptop anywhere. Printers are many at the library. And printing is free! The only thing I would suggest to Samford is that they get at least another color printer. They only have one in the JMC lab, and it's primarily used by JMC students. But overall, the technological scene at SU is great.

Health & Safety: Campus Safety does its job well-It keeps the campus safe. Samford University might not have as many "dangers" or "violations" as some other schools around it, but Campus Safety takes care of what does go on here. There are emergency phones all over campus, and maps that show where these phones are. They guard the gate so that people can't just drive in or out after 10:30 pm. They drive around campus occasionally to make sure all is going well, and when there are problems, they fix it or they address it. For example, for some reason, a couple of snakes made their way to the quad last semester. Campus Safety sent a campus-wide email informing everyone about this and advising them to avoid the quad until they took care of the problem. These are the things that convince me Samford's public safety department is a good one.

Academics: Classes at Samford University are very rigorous. You definitely have to stay on top of your schoolwork and extracurricular activities.

Samford can be a wonderful experience for students. While the first semester can be extremely difficult, with students being away from their families and friends for the first time, things become easier with perseverance. Students first need to get out of their comfort zones and invest in the hilarious, wonderful people who make up the Samford population.

That being said, the people make the experience worthwhile, and there are always opportunities to meet new people, whether it's free concerts on the quad, chilling next to the fountain in Ben Brown Plaza, renting the Vail movie room for "Glee" nights, Step Sing, or worshiping at RUF (Reformed University Fellowship). These are just some of the many things students can experience at Samford. Plus, the caring professors instill in students not only knowledge, but wisdom, preparing men and women for the future every time they step into the classroom. The liberal arts aspect prompts many to draw endless comparisons and similarities between different classes, teaching students to see the "big picture." In addition, the various convo speakers shed new light on issues that matter, making students take on new points of view about things rarely given a second thought.
