Like its surroundings in Huntsville, the Sam Houston State campus is green and full of trees. The view is scenic and aesthetically pleasing to anyone who visits and frequents the area. At SHSU, there are a handful of older buildings, where most prerequisite and basic courses are held. The buildings for specific majors are continually being renovated and expanded as the number of students increases each year. The campus is growing vastly, and many new buildings have sprung up in recent years, with plans to build even more.
The Health & Kinesiology Center (HKC), the athletic center, receives much acclaim from the students and is a modern and large facility. The only knock on it is that it gets really busy at peak hours at night, but due to its size and many features, students will certainly not be idle while visiting. The Lowman Student Center (LSC) is also a very modern, relatively new building. It has many restaurants, snack bars, conference rooms, an art gallery, an auditorium, and the Kat Klub, a vast game room with TVs and other features to entertain students. While the LSC has some entertainment value, there is room for improvement and more could be done to keep students entertained. So while the LSC is nice, there are plans to build a new student center in its place. The Newton Gresham Library is old yet adequate for student needs. Overall, the University continues to renovate and rebuild every year; but even though SHSU is expanding, the campus maintains its essence with a mix of new and old buildings.
