There isn't a strong drug scene on campus, and most students don't really notice drugs at all. Cigarettes are currently allowed on campus and are fairly popular. Because Salem is a historic campus, however, smoking is only allowed outside and not in any buildings, which can be frustrating in the middle of the winter or during bad weather. This rule is also probably responsible for the lack of other smoking drugs' visibility on campus. Alcohol is another popular drug and is allowed for students 21 years and older. There are some pretty strict rules regarding alcohol use, however, such as not being allowed to have open containers in the same room as underage students, which can be inconvenient when one student is legal and the other is not. There is quite a bit of underage drinking that goes on despite the rules, however.
If you're caught with illegal substances at Salem, they have no problems expelling you because they have a certain kind of image that they are trying to maintain. Most students at Salem are more concerned with passing their classes than with getting high and risking getting kicked out. It is possible to get away with doing drugs on campus, but it might be more difficult than at other schools.
