Health & Safety: Pathways are well-lit, but the campus police aren't very visible after dark. However, during the day, the police can be seen patrolling everywhere. Even though I am terrified of the dark, I can honestly say that I have never felt threatened walking across campus after dark because I know that there are so many campus policemen around.

Health & Safety: This campus is one of the safest places I have ever been. Since we are in the middle of nowhere, it is easy for the police to keep the peace. And the small campus helps too. I always feel safe walking outside at night. The biggest things to watch out for are theft and burglary. As long as you lock your door, especially over breaks and weekends away, and you don't leave things unattended in public for too long, you should be fine.

Health & Safety: Rural Scene – At SFU we live in a very rural setting. Crime is not an issue. Perhaps the only safety concern would be fires from electrical lines during the winter snows. Transformers have blown and caught fire on campus.

The University Police Department has an excellent presence on campus, and students generally feel safe everywhere on campus at any time of day, thanks to the security and safety measures that have been implemented. Because the crime rate in the town of Loretto is extremely low, students also feel very comfortable and safe walking around off campus, as well. But, if there is ever a time when a student doesn’t feel safe, University Police is always just a phone call away. Students can call them if they get locked out of their residence hall or if they need a ride back to their room because they don’t want to walk alone. The officers are extremely friendly and accommodating.

The student health center is convenient for students who need basic medical care, some laboratory procedures, and diagnostic services. The health center often has all of the medication available that students may need, but there are times when they refer students to a larger medical facility. If a student needs an ambulance for any reason, the University will pay the ambulance fee. Given the removed location of the University, the health center does its best to ensure the well-being of Saint Francis students.
