Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Rice students are among the most geeky and therefore tech-savvy students in America. So naturally, the computers and technology on campus are top-of-the-line. Although students admit that you can get by without your own computer, there are the obvious advantages to owning your own desktop or laptop. On the other hand, Rice has enough labs to go around, and the hours and locations are convenient to all. The labs are popular places to work, as they offer fewer distractions than the residence halls. Overcrowding is rarely a problem, and both Macs and PCs are available.

However, for the sake of convenience, a personal laptop or desktop is highly recommended. High-speed Ethernet and Wi-Fi are available and free to all students, both within the dorms and across campus, and computers are probably the most widely-used form of communication within the Rice community. Since the entire campus is wireless, it is easy to work (or not work) anywhere and any time.
