Campus Strictness: Again, I'm an upcoming freshman, so I would only be able to provide a secondhand opinion.

Campus Strictness: Campus strictness is at a good level in my opinion

Campus Strictness: The campus police don't care at all about underage drinking and will be present at public parties and not do anything. They only get strict when it comes to hard drugs/hard alcohol, where there's a strong chance of getting rusticated or expelled. The school is super strict about its honor code. Even a minor infraction can become an enormous deal.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For the most part, Rice students are very pleased with the relationship between the campus police and the student body. The prevailing attitude is that campus police (known as RUPD) are there for student protection and their well-being. Students admit that RUPD has no tolerance for drug abuse. However, drug usage is not a large problem at Rice, and most students believe that hard drug offenders deserve whatever they get. The same attitude is taken regarding cheating on graded work or exams. Rice students are shaped by the values of the Rice Honor Code and usually agree with any disciplinary actions taken against cheaters.

The Rice alcohol policy allows students to drink on campus, including underage students, as long as they keep it behind closed doors in the atmosphere of a “private party.” Because students recognize the alcohol policy as a privilege that can be lost if not handled responsibly, they usually take care of each other and monitor their friends’ intake. The police care first about the safety of the students, and they are not out looking to bust underage drinkers. In fact, the only chance an underage drinker has of getting in trouble at Rice is if they blatantly violate the alcohol policy (e.g., drinking at a public party or at the pub), and they proceed to call attention to themselves or behave belligerently.
