4 College Freshman

Transportation: There are many ways to get from Memphis to mostly anywhere in the country. Bus is accessible, as well as train rides. Usually people come from the same areas and are able to share ride.

College Senior

Transportation: Zip cars are about the only option

3 College Freshman

Transportation: Rhodes College is a gated 100 acre campus. If I'm to go off campus I am fortunate enough to ride with friends and have never really been exposed to Memphis public transportation.

College Freshman

Transportation: Campus is too small for campus wide transportation. Campus safety will drive you pretty much anywhere if you ask. Busses are provided for off-campus functions to eliminate the DD issue.

3 College Junior

Transportation: Memphis does not have good public transportation, so it is best if you bring a car.

One of the best parts of a small campus is that you can walk from one side to another in less than 10 minutes. Getting around campus is not difficult by any means, and students typically slide out of bed a few minutes before class and make it to their classroom before the campus bell tolls. However, sometimes, students need to get away for a little while. Maybe lunch at the Rat or Lair isn't appealing, and you're craving Memphis barbecue, or there's a concert at Minglewood Hall, or you just need to get away from people and the "Rhodes Bubble" for a little while. Whatever the reason, students agree that there's too much outside the gates to spend your whole college experience on campus.

Most students avoid public transportation at all costs. It is known to be pricey and somewhat unreliable, although luckily it isn't as dangerous as one would assume. Having a car or a friend with a car seems to be the most ideal option for getting around the city. Don't freak out if you can't bring your car; it usually isn't difficult to find someone willing to drive you some place or even let you borrow his or her car if you're trustworthy enough. Another option is checking out one of the campus's Zipcars, but they can get costly. As far as taxis go, some Rhodes students use them for nights out, since they take away the stress of finding a designated driver and a good/cheap parking spot, but they also tend to get costly unless you can find enough people to split the fare. Plus, sharing a cab means that you avoid directly dealing with the crazy Memphis drivers!

Did You Know?
  • There is a Care Cab system at Rhodes that allows a cab to serve students; no cash is required, but a voucher must be completed at Bailey Lane gatehouse. This means that intoxicated students do not have to worry about finding a ride home, even if they have no money at the time. This system reduces the chances of students being stuck in compromising locations and getting behind the wheel while under the influence. Rhodes heavily promotes the use of this system and other methods of preventing students from feeling forced to drive drunk.
  • Campus Safety has been known to pick students up and drive them wherever they need to go around campus if it's pouring rain, late at night, or simply a long-ish walk.
