Drug Safety: As a commuter, I don't usually stay on campus after dark. However, I hear stories of strange behavior because of drinking and the popularity of marijuana and pills on campus.

4 College Freshman

Drug Safety: Because I am not involved in that social scene, I am often unaware. However, I do know that some students smoke marijuana. Alcohol is the most prevalent however, and that is no secret!

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: At first glance, students don't seem to be involved with drugs, it's mostly alcohol. The longer you're here the more you'll find people who are involved with drugs. So far I've really seen marijuana and ecstasy, there isn't much hard stuff going on that I've seen. Most people are very modest and conservative about their usage, outside of alcohol.

3 College Junior

Drug Safety: There is a lot of unspoken pressure to drink.

1 College Senior

Drug Safety: There is a very visible use of alcohol on campus but I would't say that you would be pressured to drink. You would be offered drinks but no one would treat you badly or differently if you said no. There have been a few nights when I've gone out on campus and chose not to drink and no one treated me badly at all. The drug usage isn't as high as the alcohol usage but different groups treat it differently. Some may be fine if you decline to participate while others would treat you badly if you said no.

Alcohol is the most popular drug of choice at Rhodes. This becomes pretty evident come Thursday night, once the frat parties start up for the weekend. Campus Safety and the RAs are mostly concerned with the well-being of the students, but they aren't in a rush to stop a party. If you're under 21, Campus Safety will just ask you to put your drink down and maybe give you a little lecture about safety, not different from the lecture they'd give their own children. You'll get an alcohol violation if you're being belligerent and out of control, but there's nothing to worry about if you're responsible about drinking. Underage students get violations for having alcohol in their room, too.

As for other drugs, some Rhodes students also enjoy their weed, but it's easy to avoid if that's not your thing. Many students aren't into the drugs and alcohol scene, and that is perfectly fine! No one cares whether you drink and smoke or not, and you don't need alcohol to have fun. There are plenty of other things to do on campus, but you'll have to be willing to accept that there will be drunk people outside on Friday nights. That's the case for any college, though. The important point to note is that Rhodes students are respectful of others' lifestyles and accept that it is a personal choice.
