Guys & Girls: There is a lot of diversity at RISD, in terms of nationality, interests and style.

Guys & Girls: Of course at an art school the female to male ratio is already very distinctive; as a girl I have the tendency to look for guys at Brown more often.

3 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Most of the girls there looks way better than some of the guys up there. So confused, but I guess the girls here try to find someone that are very outgoing, but 60% of the guys here are on the border of being boring. But don't worry, some girls find guys from outside their race or guys at J&W or Brown.

Guys & Girls: Students at RISD are an interesting lot. Student looks and interests vary often by major. This is an art school, so the guys and girls in graphic design, photography, illustration and majors that aren't very physical wear amazing designer clothes, look geek and chic and keep themselves well coifed. They hang in groups usually, have cute hair cuts and are a mixed group of domestic and international students. Those in majors that are physical like sculpture, industrial design, glass, ceramics tend to rock jeans and t-shirts. Hair styles are pretty alternative and these folks tend to be more gregarious and fun loving. This group is all about utility and function so straight forward attire for girls and guys.

It may sound like a lot of places, but it certainly doesn’t sound like college: tons of young, beautiful women, surrounded by a small showing of fairly attractive, mostly gay men. But this is art school. Gay or straight, the RISD men are mostly kind, talented, and funny people, who, regardless of their other intentions, will gallantly offer to walk a girl home at night, no strings attached. Both the gay and straight dating scenes are vibrant and energetic, and there are plenty of clubs, bars, and coffeehouses for both depending on what kind of experience is desired. The women at RISD are smart, beautiful, and talented, and often dating at RISD is more inhibited by students’ tight work schedules than by the students themselves.

The most important thing to remember at RISD is that it’s personality that gets you the farthest. While there are some very beautiful women and some hot guys around, it’s really all about the attitude. If you are unique and comfortable with yourself, you will become one of the sexiest students on campus. If personality didn’t get you as far as you wanted, talent and dedication will pick up the rest. If you are looking for casual hookups, you can find them, but you may be better off going to Brown parties or to bars where Johnson & Wales kids hang out because the intensity that comes with being at RISD and surrounding yourself with art usually transfers to intensity in relationships, as well.

Social Scene
Students are friendly and helpful toward fellow students, but it is difficult to break out or into a group because people tend to stay close to the groups they've already formed. The nice thing, though, is that many are open-minded, so there is a lot of freedom of expression, tolerance to different ideas, and acceptance of the far-fetched. Also, students know how to have fun in unique ways or head out to nearby parties.
Hookups or Relationships?
During freshman year, a lot of guys and girls come to RISD already in a relationship. And whether relationships are between RISD students or not, they are pretty serious. If not in relationships, students simply hook up-but the hooking-up scene ebbs away further into college years.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
A lot of people meet one another in studio classes. This is because studio classes are interactive and require communication with others. Otherwise, a lot of people meet mutually or in social events or settings, such as parties or at dinner.
Dress Code
Many students dress however they want to dress. But, students dress differently on different days, depending on what class they have that day. Some studio classes can get messy or require a lot of physical work, so students usually dress comfortably.
