2 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: There's barely anything to do outside of campus (or inside of campus for that matter). In order to go places like the mall or a restaurant, you need to take a shuttle or know someone with a car on campus.

5 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: Ive grown up around here so im a bit biased but its a beautiful area, close to NYC and has every type of shop and restaurant you could ever want within ten minutes of the school

2 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: The only places to go would need transportation to and that is on a highway. I have not experienced many activities or shopping nearby because I'm not sure where it is.

3 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: The atmosphere on campus offers little to no interaction- people avoid getting involved in the few programs available and there are no activities

3 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: Ramapo college is right off of route 17, which is a very busy highway. There are a lot of stores on both sides of the highway. There is also 2 or 3 malls around this area. There is one huge mall called the Garden State Plaza which is 15 to 20 minutes away. The only problem is, freshmen cannot have cars. Therefore it is not easy going out because we have to either pay for a taxi, plan out the entire day around shuttles or wait for our parents to come visit and take us out. Next year will be better since we can bring our cars. The only thing about having a car is that I will have to get used to driving in this area. People here drive very aggressively and crazy so I will have to be careful.

Located in Mahwah, one would never guess that Ramapo College is really just outside of New York City; its peaceful and practically rural (horses down the road!) suburban setting makes the school quiet and secluded. However, with its accessibility to many roadway routes, Ramapo is far from remote. There is more than one train station close by, and the College runs shuttle buses to and from campus daily, with a schedule available online and posted throughout campus.

Ramapo College is nestled in the Ramapo Mountains, ensuring a hilly terrain; students (especially those with disabilities) should make note that getting around campus can be difficult during the cold winter months, when the College tends to get snow. The Ramapo Reservation is a mere five minutes from campus, giving students the opportunity to get away from campus and explore nature on the trail. Route 202 provides some of the basic needs, with a few convenience stores and fast food restaurants, but students should familiarize themselves with Route 17, as it has a much wider variety and provides a path to both Garden State Plaza and the Palisades Mall.
