College Freshman

Transportation: There is no need for transportation on campus. The schools are so small that you do not need a bus. You might want a bike if you have a class on the furthest campus from your school, but you can also walk it.

4 College Sophomore

Transportation: Walk or Take Bus or Van – The village has most of the things needed, but if you need more, there is a weekend van ride that Pitzer offers to the mall or Target. Or you can just take the bus.

3 College Freshman

Transportation: Pitzer College has a very small campus, therefore the need for transportation is not that great. Pitzer also provides shuttle services to the airport as well as the nearest Target and mall. The public transportation around Claremont is great! It is extremely easy to get to and from Los Angeles as well as any of the surrounding cities.

2 College Sophomore

Transportation: Bike It – The Green Bike Program is great you can rent bikes for the semester for free. Pretty much people get around via bike or car. Public transport is limited to a limited bus system and the train into LA. You cant have a car as a 1st year.

3 Recent Alumnus

Transportation: The train is the easiest mode of transportation when it comes to going into LA. Getting around town is pretty easy by foot, but Claremont can be pretty boring so you might want to bring a car.

Because Claremont is a fairly small town, most everything is within walking distance from Pitzer. "The Village" has a lot of what college students need, so it is very convenient in location. When you stray from the Village, however, that's when things can get tricky. Los Angeles is probably the most frequented city by Pitzer students, but getting there can be a bit of a hassle. The Metrolink station is conveniently located in The Village, so students can hop on one and it will take them right to Union Station in LA. Once there, you will have to figure out the somewhat confusing bus and subway schedules. Make sure you have a place to sleep if you're planning on staying late, though—the Metrolink trains stop running a little earlier than most night owls would like.

Having a car would be a wise choice for those who are weary of becoming claustrophobic in the "Claremont Bubble." Take into consideration, however, the steep gas prices and ever-present LA traffic. Some students at Pitzer survive every year without a car, but a good deal of them wish they had one. There is so much to explore in Los Angeles County, so whatever you decide (car or not), be sure to take advantage of all that Southern California has to offer!
