Off-campus dining near campus is great. Although Hungry Howie's is the only place that a student could reasonably walk, many places are within a short drive. There are three main areas where students can go to eat. Buffalo Road is about a five-minute drive and has places like Perkins, Applebee’s, El Canelo (a local Mexican favorite), Subway, Wendy's, Taco Bell, Sheetz, and many other restaurants. Peach Street, about 15 minutes off campus, has many more restaurants, including Texas Roadhouse, Olive Garden, Buffalo Wild Wings, O'Charley's, Quaker Steak and Lube, Red Lobster, Smokey Bones, Applebee’s, and Boston's, among many others, including the Millcreek Mall food court. Finally, the tourist area near Presque Isle has many great places to eat. Students love to go to Sara's, a local favorite, for a quick bite or the fantastic ice cream. The tourist area may be a little more expensive but some local favorites are here.
Overall, off-campus dining is very good, reasonably priced, and convenient—as long a student has a way of getting there. But, it is almost never a problem since people are always going out to eat and asking if others want to go with them. For freshmen, it is very helpful to have a friend with a car since taking the bus is no treat and can get expensive. Since so many students at Behrend have a car on campus, it is not usually difficult to find a ride.
