Diversity: There are people here from all walks of life

5 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: I live off campus right next to the college

Weather: Ahaha the weather here is a joke. You can experience all four seasons in a week!

Nightlife: I don't really party - but in terms of the best positive party, that's definitely THON.

Off-Campus Housing: It really depends on where you live and who your landlord is. I've been lucky with my landlords, they've been pretty nice, and I've gotten a decent price!

Guys & Girls: A lot of the freshman guys that just got here this year are actually more polite than some of the older guys. Girls are rather cliquish and can be catty and annoying. The biggest thing here is whether you're from the DMV or New York, and which one is better or "more hood" - it's unnecessary. But even through people like that, you can always find the gems that you want to be friends with.

1 College Sophomore

Greek Life: They think they're the coolest people. They aren't. This is college. Not high school.

3 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: Drug scene is pretty clean. Alcohol however, that's still a huge problem. Too many people (underages) like to drink, and a lot don't know their limit. It causes a scene.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: It's nice to be at a dry campus. Students still drink and party, but there's less of that here than there is at main campus.

3 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: The nightlife/things for college kids to do so they don't stay at home and wallow in self-pity, yea, that's like nonexistent. The food though - that's pretty good.

4 College Sophomore

Athletics: Everyone is a huge fan of all the sports here - and teams seem to get along really well. Athletic facilities are nice, and school spirit is huge.

3 College Sophomore

Transportation: Great if you have a car, or have a friend that has a car. Buses run on a schedule that's pretty easy to follow. Getting to the airport is a different ball game. You've got much more of a drive, and you can't just walk to it.

2 College Sophomore

Scholarships: If the financial aid counselor isn't fond of you - you will be denied scholarship/financial help. I've had to find alternate ways, twice.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: Living on campus has been an interesting experience. It's close to the classes, and to the dining hall, which makes everything much more accessible. But there are still a lot of people who chose to party, than sleep, and the walls aren't exactly soundproof. So I end up hearing more than I want to/need too. It's disruptive to studying. And I'm not a super social person - so the whole common room/study room thing, really isn't my scene. I'd prefer to work in my room, I just don't want to have to listen to other people.

Overall Experience: I really hate the atmosphere here and I'm looking to transfer. I don't like the groups of people who go here or the party scene. The only redeeming character is that the academics are amazing. As a non-religious person, I have religion shoved down my throat constantly. Living off campus I live with people playing music until 1am during finals week and the constant smell of weed in the apartments.

Academics: I have so many opportunities here academically. it's my favorite part of being at Altoona and the only thing I think the school does very well.

3 College Sophomore

Athletics: There are opportunities to get involved

3 College Sophomore

Diversity: There's an awkward mix of students who click to their ethnicity and tend to be nasty towards the other groups from time to time.

Weather: rains until it snows and then it snows until it rains

Health & Safety: The campus itself is extremely safe. many of the off campus student apartments have been experiencing serious fights in the last few years

2 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: There aren't many food options close to campus

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: If you have to work with the VA office here they are terrible

Majors: I love my program here for both my majors.

The overall experience at Penn State Altoona is a great one for most, and many say that the campus has exceeded their expectations. The smaller campus is great—and if you’re concerned about a smaller campus equaling a small-minded student body, don’t be. The Penn State Altoona campus is a perfect balance of size and personality, and the atmosphere allows for people to get to know one another in a number of situations. This is a place where friendships bloom and flourish to their fullest extent, and are then kept up long after graduation.

The professors at Penn State Altoona are all very open about their research, and each one is excited to be teaching. All the professors are real intellectuals, and they have such an abundance of knowledge in their field, as well as many other topics. And they are helpful to all students, regardless of whether you know them well or are taking one class with them. At college, students learn the most from the people who assign the textbooks, not the actual textbooks themselves (although some professors at Penn State Altoona write their own textbooks), and this University is no different.
