4 College Junior

Health & Safety: I have never felt unsafe on campus even though campus safety is slower to respond. they are getting better at it though

2 College Junior

Health & Safety: we don't actually have a health center on campus. You must walk or drive to Smart Care next door and it takes ages for a doctor to call you back. It's easy to commit a crime on campus and even if the crimes are reported it's not guaranteed that anything will be done about it

5 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: I feel very safe on campus. I have never heard of any sort of crime or abuse happening on campus. The health center we visit is off campus. That is the only thing I would change.

2 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: I feel like there is not enough staff to actually help anyone in multiple places. They are not always available on call and take too long to respond to either drug or disruption of peace calls by students.

1 College Freshman

Health & Safety: The first month of school, there were huge trashcans placed right outside some of our rooms in Traer. These trashcans were overflowing with filth and attracted a very large amount of insects, including wasps and bees. Some of them even got into our room. It took several weeks of complaining before these trashcans were moved, but they are still in the courtyard of the dorms, and rarely emptied. The rooms are cleaned once a month, and it isn't uncommon to experience a number of odd smells throughout the dorm. In terms of safety, let's just say I never leave my door unlocked. The light outside my room was burnt out when I first moved in, and I am in a dark corner at the end of the hall. Kids have thrown beer bottles at each other, and recently, someone was taken to the hospital for alcohol poisoning. There is frequent shouting outside my room in the very early hours of the morning, and I never have any idea what the hell is going on. In short, my dorm is a garbage pit, and I rarely feel safe.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Oglethorpe generally feels safe, which is especially unique because it's in a big city. Patrol officers are always present on campus, and the campus itself is surrounded by a gate. The efficiency of both could be improved, but they still provide students with a feeling of security. In any case, besides a few works of thievery, there really isn't much crime on Oglethorpe's campus. Violent crimes are unheard of, and students can walk around without fear, even at night.

As for health concerns, there is a nurse available on weekdays. Her hours aren't always the most convenient, but she's very helpful, and there is also a doctor who comes in once a week. There often are sample giveaways of useful objects, from tampons to pamphlets dealing with diseases. A student can arrange for his/her prescriptions to be sent to a nearby pharmacy, and can see the nurse when ill in order to get an excuse from going to class.
