5 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: Of course there are things I would change about this school, but it is home. I choose to go in debt to attend this school when I had free rides at other small liberal arts universities. I do not plan on leaving. Stay Stormy.

5 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: There are always going to be some students that partake in drug use. It is not very obvious unless you are looking for it. Most students use alcohol, but it is used responsibly.

3 College Sophomore

Athletics: We are a D3 school. Our sports are pretty much all club sports that travel. It is fun to go to events though. People don't come here for the sports they come for the education, sports is a fun thing for anyone to do.

Computers: We have computer labs and free printing on campus. I would say it is important to have your own computer and printer for late night studying and a crowded 24 hour room. Wifi dependability depends where you are on campus. Some floors in the dorm don't get good wifi (4th floor Dempsey, 1st floor Jobe Hanson).

4 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: No community bathrooms!!!!! <--- Best part of living on campus here vs. another school. Laundry rooms and access to kitchens can be updated. Cost is what you would expect at a private school. Social atmosphere depends on the dorm.

Academics: The workload of math and science majors... difficult but worth it. You really get to understand the material.

5 College Sophomore

Academics: Professors are amazing. Core Curriculum is not comparable to general education requirements. Easy to register and create classes or majors/minors that you want. Workload is difficult but worth it (this is college after all). Study abroad and internships are readily available at all times.

Off-Campus Dining: Again, I don't really go off campus much.

College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: I don't really leave the Oglebubble but from what I have experienced it seems pretty nice.

Campus Dining: The hall itself is beautiful. Love the campus center. The food is pretty bad. Some days are worse than others. I love that we get $100 for Starbucks, but I would gladly give that up to be able to opt out of the meal plan. All students who live on campus (and you must live on campus for three years if you do not live within a certain radius of the school) must have an all inclusive meal plan. There is one cafeteria so there is not an option of where to eat. It is also all inclusive so there are no price options on what to pay. The workers, in my experience, are rude to the students, inappropriate, and unprofessional (again, this is not all workers just a few). I would much rather pay for a limited amount of meals per week or opt out completely then pay for the food here and pay for groceries that I buy when I can so I don't have to eat here.

Majors: This school is easy to get into if you are a good student. Staying at the school is the hard part. Any classes or majors you want to take or declare are available to you, even making up your own. The professors are wonderful. It all comes down to your strengths and efforts.

Majors: I am a Sophomore, so I have not had a lot of opportunities yet. The entire school gives internship opportunities to all years so that is great. The physics major is very small.

5 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: I feel very safe on campus. I have never heard of any sort of crime or abuse happening on campus. The health center we visit is off campus. That is the only thing I would change.

5 College Sophomore

Diversity: The diversity is one of the things that drew me to this school.

5 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: I don't think they are strict at all.

2 College Sophomore

Parking: If you have a spot in Dempsey you dread moving your car. It is horrible finding a good spot, or sometimes a spot at all.

5 College Sophomore

Transportation: We are a mile away from a Marta station. There are also bus stops right outside the gates. Freshman are allowed cars and we have cars to rent on campus (very affordable). We are also in walking distance from everything a student needs.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: You are required to live on campus for 3 years. I think It would be very worth it to find an apartment near campus. I plan to live off campus my senior year.

3 College Sophomore

Weather: This is Georgia. I am from the south so it isn't a big change for me. The fact is some days will be wonderful and others will be bad. Good news is the campus is so small you will never be in the bad weather for long.

3 College Sophomore

Greek Life: Greeks seem to be important individuals in many organizations on campus. You seem to be able to tell a lot about a person from the Greek organization they are in or the one they hang around the most. There also seem to be a lot of politics in the Greek life. All of these opinions are from an unaffiliated view. I would never go Greek at Oglethorpe in the traditional sense. I would however consider the Service fraternity or the medical fraternity or honors fraternity, one that isn't a typical "Greek organization" that you think of when you hear Greek.

4 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: I would say that the majority of the students at this school are very interesting and unique. Though we are all very different we all have the same quirkiness and friendliness that it takes to be a Petrel.

4 College Sophomore

Nightlife: I stay on campus mainly. It is a fun and safe atmosphere.

4 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: The school is located between two major malls and is in range of public rail and bus lines. The campus is in close proximity to popular attractions and concert venues.

4 College Sophomore

Computers: There are many computers available in the library and 24 hour room. If you need to work or print, you will find at least one computer free for use

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: Periodically visit the financial aid office because they have information on some pretty good scholarships that you might not find otherwise.

Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Oglethorpe is unusual but only in the best of ways. The education is great, and the environment is supportive, but a stay at Oglethorpe requires hard work. Some parties are fun, but some are boring, and there are many nice people but also some cliques. However, most everyone is welcoming and not afraid to be themselves —eccentricities are the norm on campus. If someone's looking for fun, they'll eventually find it.

While many scholarships are available, it can prove hard to maintain the GPA required to keep them. This makes studying very important, and it can sometimes interfere with the social scene. For others, though, the curriculum is not so bad, and there is plenty of time to enjoy themselves both on an off campus.

Oglethorpe is a safe and nurturing environment where a student can expect to be treated as an individual. The classes are tiny but by no means lacking in comparison to courses at other schools. In fact, an advantage of Oglethorpe is the one-on-one treatment a student can expect from teachers. There aren't many students here, so it's easy to get to know everyone. The school is beautiful, and so is the atmosphere—it's safe and, even better, inviting.
