5 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: I don't think they are strict at all.

2 College Sophomore

Parking: If you have a spot in Dempsey you dread moving your car. It is horrible finding a good spot, or sometimes a spot at all.

5 College Sophomore

Transportation: We are a mile away from a Marta station. There are also bus stops right outside the gates. Freshman are allowed cars and we have cars to rent on campus (very affordable). We are also in walking distance from everything a student needs.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: You are required to live on campus for 3 years. I think It would be very worth it to find an apartment near campus. I plan to live off campus my senior year.

3 College Sophomore

Weather: This is Georgia. I am from the south so it isn't a big change for me. The fact is some days will be wonderful and others will be bad. Good news is the campus is so small you will never be in the bad weather for long.

3 College Sophomore

Greek Life: Greeks seem to be important individuals in many organizations on campus. You seem to be able to tell a lot about a person from the Greek organization they are in or the one they hang around the most. There also seem to be a lot of politics in the Greek life. All of these opinions are from an unaffiliated view. I would never go Greek at Oglethorpe in the traditional sense. I would however consider the Service fraternity or the medical fraternity or honors fraternity, one that isn't a typical "Greek organization" that you think of when you hear Greek.

Guys & Girls: I would say that the majority of the students at this school are very interesting and unique. Though we are all very different we all have the same quirkiness and friendliness that it takes to be a Petrel.

4 College Sophomore

Nightlife: I stay on campus mainly. It is a fun and safe atmosphere.

4 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: The school is located between two major malls and is in range of public rail and bus lines. The campus is in close proximity to popular attractions and concert venues.

4 College Sophomore

Computers: There are many computers available in the library and 24 hour room. If you need to work or print, you will find at least one computer free for use

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: Periodically visit the financial aid office because they have information on some pretty good scholarships that you might not find otherwise.

College Sophomore

Academics: I just recently changed my major so I have not been able to fully experience the workload. However, from what I must do in order to graduate and from the classes I am experiencing now, I see that being a Communications major is not going to be an easy task.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: The teachers are very helpful and available, give or take a few of them, the courses are good and challenging, and the options available for academic help, study abroad, and other things of the like are good as well.

Campus Strictness: There are times when they are strict and times when they are lenient. It really just depends on the situation and the time.

4 College Sophomore

Athletics: Our athletic teams are well supported and announced by the campus. Games are interesting and the teams are close.

College Sophomore

Nightlife: I am not really a nightlife type person, so I would not know in particular. The parties around campus can get pretty loud to the point where they are heard from my dorm room.

3 College Sophomore

Weather: Unless there is snow, school continues despite the weather. The pathways to class and the buildings are still accessible in heavy rain, although the open area is pretty inconvenient for those without cars or umbrellas.

2 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: I feel like there is not enough staff to actually help anyone in multiple places. They are not always available on call and take too long to respond to either drug or disruption of peace calls by students.

4 College Junior

Off-Campus Dining: We have a lot of local places and thankfully they give student discounts.

Athletics: People mostly attend the soccer games and basketball games. We do not have football, so basketball is our main sport.

Campus Housing: For the cost, we could use a lot more perks.

4 College Junior

Off-Campus Housing: There are many apartments near campus and are very affordable. They are more affordable than on campus housing.

4 College Freshman

Weather: Although we are in the south Georgia gets more east coast weather than "Dirty South" weather. Being from Alabama I am used to sweltering summers and frigid winters, however Georgia has less humid summers, more wind, more sun, and it gets kind of chilly for someone who is used to the heat until November or even December. It didn't take long to adapt and going home to winter over the holiday break was easy. The weather doesn't affect my campus experience, it can't because not going to class isn't an option! It's bearable but bring winter clothes and summer clothes because you never know what the temperature will be despite the season.

Campus Housing: Dorm life is about 50/50. The worst dorms to be in are Traer and Jacobs/Alumni halls simply because they are the oldest buildings and are really rundown. The school has been savaging them too long, however I did hear there are going to be new dorms built in place of these dorms. The best dorms are Dempsey, Jobe Hanssen and NoSo. These dorms are fairly new and are kept up very well. The atmosphere in the nice dorms is pretty average. These dorms are a lot quieter than Traer and Alumni/ Jacobs which are known as the party dorms. Dempsey is quiet which is usually where people who study a lot stay (unless they run out space and you end up in Traer) and if they desire some high energy late at night they will go to the "party dorms." Cost is actually not bad. Traer should be as cheap as Alumni/Jacobs because of the building being old, but I digress. the other buildings are definitely worth the pay. Housing process is very simple. Fill out the application submit your fee and they notify everyone what room they are in, who there roommate is, their contact info (phone number, twitter, facebook) and also the suite mates contact information. If there is a change in any of that they will send an email with new information regarding the change. When we moved in they had a team who literally just strip your car of every box, bag, anything and they take it to your room. It literally takes less than 5 minutes, and your only job is to pack and unpack. It was very easy.

5 College Freshman

Drug Safety: Drug and alcohol abuse is zero tolerance here. There were a couple of bust in the freshman dorm in the beginning of the school year and afterwards we haven't heard of any more. They make it very apparent in orientation that we have zero tolerance for underage drinking and drug use. They kick students out for drug usage. We are actually becoming a transition school concerning tobacco use but until this year we were a smoke free campus and we may go back to that. Any time there is alcohol abuse by anyone they take the necessary precautions and if it is underage they will take students to judicial board and usually there is community service involved for the first account. When upperclassmen are found to be giving alcohol to students they are also taking to judicial board and usually receive severe repercussions (suspension). At Greek parties, the coordinator is always walking around making sure no one underage is drinking and if they are they are escorted to their dorm unless there are signs of alcohol poisoning.

Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Oglethorpe is unusual but only in the best of ways. The education is great, and the environment is supportive, but a stay at Oglethorpe requires hard work. Some parties are fun, but some are boring, and there are many nice people but also some cliques. However, most everyone is welcoming and not afraid to be themselves —eccentricities are the norm on campus. If someone's looking for fun, they'll eventually find it.

While many scholarships are available, it can prove hard to maintain the GPA required to keep them. This makes studying very important, and it can sometimes interfere with the social scene. For others, though, the curriculum is not so bad, and there is plenty of time to enjoy themselves both on an off campus.

Oglethorpe is a safe and nurturing environment where a student can expect to be treated as an individual. The classes are tiny but by no means lacking in comparison to courses at other schools. In fact, an advantage of Oglethorpe is the one-on-one treatment a student can expect from teachers. There aren't many students here, so it's easy to get to know everyone. The school is beautiful, and so is the atmosphere—it's safe and, even better, inviting.
