Facts & Statistics

Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Always get to know your professors, and try not to be shy- ask them for help!
  • Be nice to your RAs.
  • Don't be afraid to ask any question that pops into your mind.
  • Don't worry about your prerequisites right away, especially if you haven't decided on a major. Take classes that interest you, then worry about core requirements.
  • Get a routine down early or you'll won't sleep right all semester.
  • It's okay not to have a major picked out right away.
Interviews & Information Sessions
Interviews are recommended, but are not a required part of the application process for first-time and transfer students. They are, however, a great way for admissions to get to know the student, and vice versa. If considering an interview, call the Admissions Office to set one up on campus . These on-campus interviews are conducted by an admission officer or current Oxy senior. If you are unable to visit the campus, Alumni Interviews are availible in most parts of the country. Schedule these online only.
Campus Tours
Campus Tours are led Monday through Friday except on holidays, during semester breaks, and at finals. Tours run twice a day, at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., and last about one hour. Although the Admissions Office can accomodate walk-in visitors, it is easier for both parties if visitors reserve their spots in advance. Call (323) 259-2700 to schedule and to confirm that a tour is being given the day you intend to visit. Groups of 10 or more may be accommodated through prior arrangements with the Admissions Office.
Overnight Visits
Occidental offers high-school seniors and transfer students the opportunity to stay overnight in a residence hall. During these visits, you will receive meal coupons for dinner and breakfast at the dining hall, and are welcome to attend classes and meet professors in particular areas of interest. (The Admissions Office has a list of classes that are open to visitors.) To arrange this type of visit, you must visit the admissions website to fill out liability, health, and emergency information forms. Please do this at least 24 hours before visiting. Overnight visits are availible Monday through Thursday while classes are in session, i.e. from late September to early May excluding holidays, exam periods, and semester breaks.
